Brake upgrade
I finally got around to starting my brake upgrade on my 85 4Runner. The thing is, I did the last thing I was going to do first. I put on a dual diaphram brake booster. All I can say is WOW, I have freakin unbelieveable brakes now.
The pedal is real soft, but it doesn't take any pressure to get the front brakes to lock up. I adjusted up the back brakes and it felt better. I got to get one of those proportioning valves now and even up the braking. Holy crap I can't wait to get the new rotors, calipers, master cyliner, etc. I am going to put 94 4Runner V6 front brake components on the front end. If you haven't changed out the old single diaphram booster, that is a great upgrade. Anyone have any idea how I can get a firmer pedal. I extended the pedal clamp and jam nut all the way out. I don't know what else to do but get used to it. |

Yeah I am using the smaller MC. I just unbolted the MC and slid the BB out and the larger one in. I plan on getting a larger MC, so maybe that will solve the soft pedal. Thanks

Today is the day for me. I will be swapping out the old 85 front brake hardware for some fresher 94 V6 4Runner hardware. That should help me stop a little better. Pics to be posted later.

I got rotors and 2 studs ready to head to parts store in the morning. I knew I was making too good a time for it to be true. Taking 2 studs cause I fubarred one of them. Making sure I get the right stud. I will keep you guys posted. Outsane, I am taking plenty of pics, but so far all I can show you is boxes with the wrong parts. Thanks ADVANCE. |
Well the damnest thing has come up. None of the rotors that ADVANCE or Oreilly's sells other than the ones for an 85, will work. The rotors both parts stores carry have the wrong sized stud holes in them. The tips of the M12X1.5 studs will not go through the holes in the rotors. We looked at 4Runners, Truck, tacomas, tundras, t100's, the works.
Someone please tell me what am I missing on the rotors. |
I think I used Landcruiser rotors..

what kind of brake booster did you use? a junk yard and new brand?

I still don't understand the situation with the studs for a 94 not fitting into the rotor at all. That just doesn't make sense. |
Does anyone know if a 93 V6 pickup brake booster will work or does it have to be a
4Runner. |

Yep I think that is what I am going to have to do. I think I will go back down a couple years on the calipers too. The gap for the rotor to roll through on the 94 4Runner is noticeably wider than on the calipers for 93 4Runner.

86-95 rotors will not work on 81-85 hubs. The 86-95 rotors bolt to the back of the IFS Hub where the 81-85 rotors are pressed on with the wheel studs. What you need is FJ60 rotors. These press on just like the SA rotors. Then you can use 95 V6 4R calipers and pads. Along with these pads you will need 1" bore MC and a Dual Diaphram Brake Booster.
