Another California gross polluter

California at it again with.........you guessed it ding ding ding a failed smog test and a bonus gross polluter stamp right between your cheeks!!!! Wonderful, nothing better than payin hard cash to have the smog kook tell you "oh it failed" and its a gross polluter by the way, have a nice day!! Truck has a rebuilt nice engine with nice parts and a Street RV head, 268 cam with less than 1000 miles which I have never heard of any problems passing smog with, however, I dont think thas really the issue.

Before this test, I added an egr and modulator that didnt come with the truck when I bought it in 2010 and hooked vac lines accordin to the schematic in the fsm: its not like i'm not trying!!
Oil change, new plugs, cap, rotor, timing likes to be at 7 with the 268 cam (5 idles like crap) 91 octane 76, Reman injectors, new air filter. Truck idles a bit rough and has a slight miss as well as a check engine light that comes on when and only when cruising at 2600 rpm. The lights says its 02 sensor related and nothing else and I replaced my sensor less than two years ago but on a bad engine. That light came on before and after I replaced the sensor.

Smog numbers:

Failed HC at 15 mph with a measurement of 140 with a max of 133

Gross polluter criteria for NOx at both 15 and 25 with a measurement of 2993 @ 15 with max 1090 and 2193 at 25 with a max of 1130.

This indicates a lean/hot condition so besides a new cat, retatarding timing and rxp gas kicker, what could be causing this? I am assuming my egr is not working and that will be the first test. Thanks everyone. Whats polluting our state more than anything are illegals and backwards politicians like Pelosi Boxer and Feinstein :pop:

New cat and O2 would probably be a good place to start. I keep a brand new one of each that I put on just for smog testing.

Rough idle is probably the reason for the high HC, could be running too rich or have an air/vacuum leak, fix that and see how things go. Go though each and every sensor and actuator and assume they are bad and then test them to prove they are good. Check the fuel pressure regulator vacuum and make sure that is working.

High NOX is likely EGR, test all that out and also clean and port out all the EGR passages from the exhaust manifold back to the valve and piping into the engine. EGR on these early trucks is pretty weak and on the dyno tests, they have to be working perfect. Check all the little vacuum lines feeding the modulator for clogging. Retard the timing down to where is barely runs and you might also try fabbing up a restrictor plate for the exhaust to push more exhaust gas back to the EGR.

Thanks for the reply Crawler, ill start there. I have a nice cat and 02 sensor on hand too.

best of luck to you , hope you can get it to pass

Don't pollute my thread

Glad they don't test for smog in KS. Hell they don't test for anything. When I registered my 81 all they did was look up the VIN to make sure it wasn't stolen and that was that, no safety inspection or anything.

Sorry TS but the only suggestion I can offer you is move to somewhere that doesn't do smog tests.

GA has a 25 year rolling Window.

It failed once a few years ago. Spark Plugs, Air Filter, timing adjustment. Passed with flying colors.

Exempt now =)
