89 4runner gas mileage???

I know their is a gas mileage thread up here and i am overlooking it, so dont flame me to bad for asking. I am about to pick up an 89 runner with the 22r auto, stock ifs, and its lifted about 4 inches on 35's. The guy told me the truck has 4.88's but im not sure. I was just wondering what you guys with similar setups are getting as far as mpg's go. I have a 92 now with the 3.0 thats almost stock and its killing me on gas. Im just wondering if the 89 is gonna be much better. A buddy told me the lower gears would actually help considering the truck wont be struggling to accelerate but i dunno. Thanks in advance for input!

I would think that a "22re"+auto+35's+4.88 would be nice to play with but I'm going to assume that you'd be no higher than 15. My 22re pickup with a 5spd and 31's on 4.10s gets about 17 or so. I think the end ratio would be about the same, 31's+4.10 and 35s+4.88 should be close if I'm thinking right.

Yes I know they are soooooo similar but this is just my opinion. My 95 3.0 auto on 33's with 4.88's get about 12, I know it should do better.

Yea i go wheeling every weekend and sometimes during the week, but i daily drive my truck so i was hoping that it would get better than my 92.

Hows the 92 setup??? Sorry don't recall. Best think to do is add a bit of info in your sig soooo we know what kind of junk you got. :great:

lol thanks man good advice. Its really all stock lift with some slight cranking on the t bars and 31 10.50 baha claws. Stock gearing too. I was gonna start building it but decided i might as well go ahead and get what ive always wanted, a 1st gen. Plus i cant stand the 3.0, i just did the head gaskets and let me tell you, not worth it for it to get such bad gas mileage and not have any power.

Heres a current pic.

Well I don't think you'd do much better on gas with the 89...but it's a good machine to start to build. If you can swing it grab it and build. I know you'd get better mileage with different tires on the 92. That things a lot cleaner than mine. Nice ride!

I plan on doing the 5spd swap on my 95. I have to pull the heads first, I think I have a bent valve or two, I'm really hoping its not a rod. Hydro-locked her a while back and she has not been right since.

I get like 16mpg with my 3.slo and 31's w/5spd

Whats the trick? lol. Must be thats its a 5spd, mine cant be getting better than 13

I was getting 18mpg with my 3.0 and 33's, stock gearing. GPS verified distance as well :)

Getting 16-17 with my 22re, and 35's, 4.30 gearing. The 35's I have are heavy tires, I was getting 19mpg with 33's before.

Driving style, and shift points have a lot to do with it. I shift between 3-4k, and try not to take off like a race car. Cruising rpms are between 2500-3300.

That sounds similar to me. my '88 3.0/5spd/5.29s/33s gets around 18-20, i believe. Have yet to get the GPS on it, but i was veryifying mileage with mile markers on the side of the road. Getting around 300+ miles per tank.

I get about 17 MPG with mine on 32" tires and a 4 inch lift and stock gearing.

Red_Chili 01-27-2010 12:09 PM

The first Chili, a '90/3.slo, 5.29s, 33x12.50/15s, got around 12-15mpg.

Ah, the mighty 3.0. All the power of a 4 cylinder, all the mileage of a 454.

Chili II got ~15-17 (fair amount of city) on 35s and 5.29s. Now with a 3.4 and 4.88s rolling 35s, it gets 15-19 (the high end, exclusively highway). 13mpg towing a rather heavy popup trailer across Wyoming. I am capable of getting 12mpg if I am really excited to get to Moab, pulling said trailer.

The aerodynamics of a brick with drag mechanisms hanging from the fuselage... I am not surprised nor disappointed.

PimpinUHos 01-27-2010 07:17 PM

I'm guessing that going from 13ish to 17-20 would qualify as way happy?

I totally agree dude! when i had my auto i was getting around 15 then the 5spd brought my numbers WAY WAY up! i was soooo stoked!

PimpinUHos 01-29-2010 06:36 AM

I'd love to get 17-20mpg. It'd mean I don't have to mess with this piece-o-crap 3.0 any more!
