85 4runner 22RE first start after sitting 5-6? years..blue smoke
Finally got the varnish out of the fuel tank. (Acetone then vinegar) Cleaned and flushed all fuel lines, new pump. Used Stabile Fogging fluid and turned engine over 3-4 times before starting. It Started and ran really rough for about 10 minutes then settled down. Lots of rattling and deisel like sounds...seems like it needs timing guides and valve adjustments.
Let it run in the driveway for an hour. More or less it seemed to smooth out. However - lots of blue/grey smoke out of tailpipe-under load- revving it really smokes. Smells like oil. Holding at 3000 rpm gives steady blue/grey plume. Engine has 190K miles. I installed new air filter. plugs/wires cap & rotor. fresh oil/filter 10w30.
PO says it ran well when he parked it 5-6 years ago. Also says HG was done back then (estimated about 30K ago)
My quesion: Before tearing this thing down for rebuild, is there any chance oil rings are just stuck and maybe i should soak the cylinders.......if so what is the suggested concoction? Ive read that sometimes the oil rings are just gummed up from sitting along time?

Valve stem seals could be shot. Personally I would get it hot and drive it. It may clear up. I have a issue with one sitting for 10 years. I am pulling the engine and it is getting a light rebuild. Seals, rings, bearings.

Since I know nothing about the condition of this motor, I decided to have some fun. First I put Berrymans B-12 chemtool into fuel tank at recommended 1oz per gal. I let it idle for about an hour. Not expecting too much, but wanted to get some of the solvent into the intake, injectors and valves. Wow- After an hour at idle it was running smoother. When revving it still had a cloud of steady smoke blue gray in color. The plume seemed darker colored then before the additive.
Next, my son had an unused bottle of Seafoam so I decided to do a piston soak. Removed the plugs, rotated engine until all cylnders near same level and poured 4oz into each. Re-installed plugs and let soak. (plugs installed to prevent evaporation) After 1 hour I hand rotated the crank 5-10 Deg in each direction just to give the rings some movement. Funny, as soon as a rotated a very slight bit, I hear 'whoosh' sound like liquid running down a drain. So - I assumed that one or all of the cylinders let the Seafoam run down past the rings. In hind site, I should have removed the plugs so there was not cavity pressure.
This morning after the 20 hour soak, I removed the plugs. With a dowel, I checked the liquid (Seafoam) level. Cylnder 1, 3, &4 were empty. Cylinder 2 was near same level. So - This comfirms that the Seafoam ran down past the rings in 3 of the 4 cylinders. Since Seafoam is very viscous, I decided to repeat the soaking with a thicker cleaner.
Went to Walmart and picked up Marvel Mystery Oil (MMO) $3.95. Poured 4 oz into each cylinder and let soak. This time I will not install plugs. I'll hand-rotate the crank 5 deg back an forth to give a little movement after 6 hrs. My hope is that the MMO will slowly drain past the compression rings and onto the oil ring.
