84 truck w/22r motor -> 3.0L v-6 swap info needed...

i tried searching but no luck. my '84 truck is lacking power and seem's like anymore just to get around town i have to keep the throttle wide open all the time. my '95 4runner with a 3.0L v-6 has plenty of low-end torque and moves w/o much effect even though the weight of the 4runner is higher than the truck.

anyways, i am interested in swapping a 3.0L v-6 motor in the truck. what all will i need? engine, tranny, wiring, gas tank?? what else? anybody done the swap? any links to info reguarding the swap?

any help is appriciated! thanks, casey.

All due respect, but you are fu(king nutz putting a 3.slow in there. For the same $ you could have a good motor.

Do your research first. Lots and lots of better choices to make, the 3.slow is at the very bottom of the list.

I have a 3.slow and have done eveything possible to get performance from it. True, it's a little better than a stock 3.slow, but for the money invested I could have put a LS1 in there and replaced the entire drivetrain w/ stuff beefy enough to handle 400 HP.

Trying to get performance from the 3.slow is often refered to as "polishing the turd".

Yeah, you should just swap in a 3.4L V-6, WAY better engine, or a 4.3 Chevy, or a 350 V-8, ANYTHING but the 3.0!!!

i think i recently read that a 3rz was an easy swap also, that the manual tranny bolts right up to it and the mounts all line up. double check me on that (anyone able to confirm?). if so, it would also be a better engine than the 3.0 and the 22re, based on my experience.

do you guys think it would be worth it to swap the 3.0L from my 4runner and put a 3.4L in the 4runner? the 4runner is much nicer than the truck and i'd rather have a better motor in that.

If you're dead set on doing it, I'll sell you my 3.0, as I'm going to be doing a 1UZ swap soon.

i might be interested depending on what kind of deal you'll make with me.

i already got my hands on a 3.4L motor, however, there are some parts missing on it. like upper intake manifold, wiring harness, maf, etc. it was left over from my buddies v6 mr2 swap.

so can anyone tell me what i need to swap out the 22r motor and swap in a fuel injected v6 motor (3.0L or 3.4L)?? thanks

i dont see the 3.0 being a good choice...i do see a cheaper alternative tho...its what i have done and im happy with it..

i have an 82 with a 22r that runs strong
35's and all that jazz

i got 5:29's and that made me happy in the pants. next is a header....it does really really well with the 5,29's

i try that before you swap

X2 on this idea ! This is what I'll do. The 3FZ has the same horsepower as the 3.0L - in a 4 cylinder engine. There is even a turbo available for it.

I plan on 4.88 gears in my 85 as I'll probably never go above a 33 tire.

i have considered keeping the 22R and installing a holley carb, header, and full exhaust system with new cat and muffler, but before i can do that i need to replace the timing chain and oil pump. if i'm going to do that i'm thinking about completely rebuilding the whole motor. by the time i'd be done with that and power mods i'd be out close to $2,000.

that's why i was thinking about a V6 swap as an option because i can get a whole 3.0L swap for around $1,000 and a 3.4L swap for around $1,500. that doesn't include the transmission though. it would include motor, wiring harness, maf, fuel tank, etc.

the thing i'm wondering is what motor mounts would i use, what tranny, etc. i have no idea if the V6 motor(s) will bolt up to the '84 drivetrain and motor mounts. can anyone chime in here with this info? thanks.

You can't get a "whole 3.0 swap for around $1000" No way. Between all of the fabrication, wiring and exhaust work, drive shafts you'll be well over that. Plus you'll now have to deal with the increased investment in fuel - your 3.0 isn't exactly going to get 30mpg.

The 3.4 sill be more expensive, but definitely worth it.

22rx and 3.x motor mounts are completely different... Not even in teh same spot on the frame.

Your best best is to swap the 3rz...

well, when i said a whole 3.0L swap for $1,000 that "technically" is a complete swap. just not for the '84 truck. that price is for the complete motor, wiring harness, ecu, ignitior and coil, afm, fuel tank, fuel lines, etc. that price doesn't include all the fabrication like you mentioned; exhaust, wiring, motor mounts, shafts, etc.

if you guys are recommending the 3RZ what all is needed for that?? is there a write-up somewhere?? thanks.

I assumed that $1k included everything you mentioned... But you need a tranny, tcase (and/or adapter), shafts, crossmember, etc, etc.

For the 3rz swap, search Pirate for 4RnrRick's swap into an 86 or on MarlinCralwer for BigMike's swap into his truck and also into Marlin's...
