84 toyota heating and carb problems
Hey everyone! i bought an 84 toyota rebuilt the whole thing but im still having engine troubles. #1: when i start the truck when its cold the choke will come on but when it heats up it will not shut off and im not sure how to set it but i finaly have teh idling and the timing set. #2: It wont blow heat at all and when i checked the radiator there was air bubbles comming out i also changed the thermostat and it still wont heat up. If anybody knows something about this a little help would be much apreciated

I just bought an 84 that is carb'ed and had the same issues. Rebuilt the carb, which you may have already done. Did you degrease the linkage? With respect to the coolant, mine takes quite a while to heat up. How long are you running it? Does the radiator or top/bottom hose get warm?

Regarding the heat issue....does the truck overheat? If not, then feel the water line going into the heater core at the firewall. Is it hot like it's full of hot water? Is it empty ( very soft)? backtrack from there if it is. If the hose feels full of hot water then check the heater control valve to see if it's working. Move the interior heat lever back and forth to verify that the plunger in the valve is actually moving in and out letting the water flow through and back to the engine.

FOr the carburetor, make sure ALL vacuum lines are leak-free and hooked up right and that all thermo-vacuum switches work (the little plastic things that lines hook up to along the intake manifold).
When the temperature rises, the thermal-controlled vacuum switch valve allows vacuum to the choke pull-off diaphragm. This pulls a lever that disengages the fast idle cam and resets the idle down to 700RPM. If you're temp gauge is telling the truth, and your motor is REALLY not warming up, then that choke pull-off diaphragm won't get the vacuum it needs. Or the diaphragm has leak. Or the linkages are sticky. Or the fast idle cam is not adjusted properly... (sigh) this is why I'm going EFI after my next smog check :hillbill: |

And if there are bubbles in the radiator you need to bleed the system. Run the engine with the radiator cap off and let all the air bubble out. Keep an eye on the temp gauge.

On my carb, all links were on the backside (closest to the firewall). I sprayed them down with brake cleaner and a toothbrush. Moved a whole lot more freely afterwords.

k so i rebuilt my carb and the solenoiid was not working properly..When i priced it at toyota it was 300$ luckly the guy working parts had a good carb he did not need and i bought it off him for 75$ and it practicly brand new just a lil dusty. Im putting it on tonight so i guess ill find out if it was worth it.

keep us posted on progress.

k so i got the carb on and changed my oil and it runs good but when i give it gas the motor sputters and it vibrates alot any ideas?
Given that the truck is sitting on level ground, where does the fuel level sit in the little window on the carb body? Did you adjust or measure your float level when assembling the carb? Mine had the same symptoms as you describe. I had to take it apart a second time after replacing the fuel filter. Must have disloged the crud in the line and ended up in the jets and fuel bowl. Used compressed air to ensure the jets were clean.

could that also be a reason for not being able to set the carb to run at 740 rpms... because when i do it slowly climbs back up to 1000rpms
To be honest, I am still learning about carbs and can't answer that question. Anyone else able to help out? Abececarian....Thook, where are you when we need you?
k so i reset my float but when i start it up its like it unsets itself so i took it appart did it again and it still unset itself any ideas?
okay so the guy who has teh truck before me messed up all the hoses and i think i got them right but i am not sure so i was wondering if somebody had a picture of there own set up... i dont need the one in teh manuel i have that one and i cant follow it.
okay so i got a new problem i noticed that the oil pessure gauge wasnt showing that i had any oil pressure so i got a new one and it still wont.So does this mean that my motors done? or could i just need a new oil pump?
Buy a new oil pump. Cheap. How long have you been running it on low oil pressures? Any knock?
theres no knocks and im not sure cause ive been building the truck over the past year ive only drivin it in and out of the garage i only noticed the other day
Did you re-use the oil pump from the original block?
i didnt touch the motor because it seemed to be running fine all i did to it was change the oil.
