84 4runner air pump problem
First off hello this is my first post.
I have an 84 4runner with a 22r motor and I am having a problem with the air pump system, the prob is as follows. The way I understand this system to work should be with the engine cold at idle the air pump should pump into a bypass hose, once the engine is warmed up the actuating valve switches and pumps into the air cleaner, then at 2000 RPM with the engine fully warmed up the valve should intermittently cycle between the exhaust and air cleaner. My problem is it continually pumps into the air cleaner, the valve is ground switched and if I ground the valve it does switch to the exhaust like it should. My question is what controls the valve? And does anyone have an electrical diagram they could scan or a place where I could download one? Thanks. |
My 83 did the samething when i first got it. I have the FSM for my 83 i cna look it up for you if no one has a faster answer.
The way i fixed mine, i just gutted the switch, so it blew air into the exhaust all the time, did not seem to affect anything, passed three smog checks that way. Let me know if you need me to dig out the FSM, its burried in the garage desk. |
Only prob with running with it pumping into the exhaust full time is it will back fire on deceleration. This is why they alternate between the exhaust and air cleaner.
