4.70 transfer case gears
Well, I searched and didn't find what I was looking for...My question is are the trail creeper 4.70's transfer case gears low enough gearing for my rig? I have 33x12.50 15 tires and 456 gears, I do some rock crawling and a little of everything else. I found the gears for a around 300.00 + install if I went duals then I would be close to 1000.00 by the time you buy the 2nd case, 2nd transfer case kit, transfer case skidplate and driveline modds....I've heard of people doing the 4.70 gears with 2 transfer cases but with 33's I think thats a little much my next set of tires will be 35's but that's down the road.
I really need lower gears but I like going 70-80 mph on flat ground and 529's gears installed would most likely be over a grand and 70 mph would most likely be at 7000 rpm's....:think: |
5.29 gears are less than 10% change over 4.88 gears, which with 33" tires would be the equivilant of stock 4.10 gears on stock 29" tires. You're not going to be spinning that fast. Only 10% faster than stock, and only 15% faster than your current 4.56 gears. If you cruise around at 4000 rpms on the freeway, you'd be turning 4700 rpms.
With 4.7 xfer gears, it's like having a 1/2 gear ratio. So if you drive around in 1st/low all the time, with the new gears, you'd be in 2nd at the same crawl speed. You'd have one lower gear. |
Can't go any lower unless you do duals with 4.7s in both. Your gears in your axles affect the tire size more than the xcase gears do.

When you need to be "reasonable" about how much you spend.... I think the 4.7 kit is GREAT. My setup is exactly the same as yours. I put the 4.7 and twin stick in last year and love em. I have a selectable rear locker, so the twin stick is nice when you want to just be in 2wd-low range....

4.7's should be plenty good for you with 33's.

Thanks for the reply's guys...I'm going to order the 4.7 kit this weekend, local shop "jackit" said they install the gears for 223.00 if I birng them the transfer case, sounds fair.

I run a Marlin dual ultimate crawler. I spend most of my time with the rear case (4.7 gears) in low when on the trail (on 39.5" tires). I only shift into double low on the technical, extreme portions of the trail.

good post i was wondering about running the 4.7's in a single case until I could afford the dual setup. But I think I 'll just wait until the money is ready When I want to go speed up I want it!
BTW i may be confused but there is a mention that T-case gears effect drivabilty on the street in 2wd? 4.7's in a single case would effect highway speeds? |

Well let me know what you think after you install the 4.7's in a single case?
Did it keep your foot off the clutch ? Did it keep you from smoking your clutch? is your trail speed reduced enough? Is it a PITA when you want to travel at a faster pace? I was thinking that I could shift in to 2wd when I want to drive fast since I am locked in the rear. But concerned when you try really hard lines and you dont have a low low gear does the one reduction enough to get by? I am tight on cash now too and looking for better offroad performance let me know. |

I did a little bit of figuring. I plugged in a tire of 36x14.5 on 16" rims. Looks like there is 560.5 revolutions per mile

I have stock trans / transfer case with 33" KM2s and 5.29 gears with Spartan locker.
I see 3200 RPM at 70 mph in 5th gear. Confirms what I found on the Grimm Jeepers gear calculator. It is a little buzzy but not bad. It's my daily driver. I drive between 65 and 70 on the freeway so I have to be a little patient. I have put 25K miles on it with no problems. |
