22RE Randomly Dying???

Sometimes when I come to a stop my engine just dies. I start it up again and rev a little and its fine. SO sometimes it does and sometimes it doesn't die??? I dont know what to do????

mine is doing this as well. i cant figure it out. it acts just like my car did when the ICV went dead, but this is carbed lol so thats out of the picture. Look for vacuum leaks, and make sure ur air filter is clean. besides that, i would like to know whats going on too.

check for a short or a loose wire somewhere

deserttoy84 Feb 27, 2006 08:05 PM

maybe ur throttle body is dirty

YeloSub7 Feb 27, 2006 10:59 PM

I was thinking the throttle body at first, but it only dies sometimes. I should probably still check it though. Also thought it might be the EGR valve, but when I disconected that I still had the same problem.

check wires! just about 98% of my breakdowns i have with my pickup is from some baaad wiring jobs. from either me or the dumb guy who had it before me or just good old 21 year wear and tear falling apart. try to check every conection you can. only doing it sometimes would make sence a wire of some sort falling off and connecting again randomly. kind of like my starter :)

Pop the top off the dist, grab the shaft in the dist and try to wiggle, left-right / pull up-down on it. I'm wondering if maybe it's moving around in there, so some times you have good spark others spots it's weak. Some up-down play is normal, but not much and there should be no right-left movement.

How many miles are on that dist??

the distruber was just replaced less than a year ago... I will be checking this stuff this friday when I have some time, hopefully I can figure this out, thanks...

When's the last time you changed your fuel filter?

YeloSub7 Mar 1, 2006 09:50 PM

I never changed that myself, but I think the previous owner did which would have been around a year or so ago...

For the $5 it costs I'd change it. It may be getting clogged. As you're sucking gas through it, it may pull some crap in and clog, cutting fuel, and the truck dies. When it goes kaput, it relieves the suction and opens flow again, therefore allowing you to fire it up and take off again. I've had it happen on a couple of my vehicles. Just a thought. A year is about time for a new one anyway.
