22RE Eating Oil

My 22RE has 154K and it eats oil. Its not burning it and its not leaking at all. WHERE IS IT GOING?

michalik_piotr 08-29-2007 12:05 PM

your radiator? check that...

lethe 08-29-2007 12:14 PM

my truck was using oil but it wasnt burning it, it would spit out the exhaust though. you can tell if thats happening because you will have some build up where ever your exhaust dumps out.

Hold up a rag or peice of cardboard behind your exhaust and let the truck idle for about 2 minutes, check it out.... I'd be willing to bet you'll find your missing oil on the carboard....or in your coolant. :)

What quantity are we talking about?

corvettelvr73 08-29-2007 06:39 PM

I put about 1 -1.5 quarts in ever oil change.

kingbrian 08-29-2007 07:30 PM

mine uses about about a quart every thousand miles or so.... but thats cuz my valve guide seals are shot. i can idle for a couple minutes and blip the throttle and a puff-o-smoke comes out.... but she runs great

What is your oil change interval frequency?

michalik_piotr 08-29-2007 10:08 PM

all combustion engines burn oil, its just the nature of the beast. you may not notice it on a new lexus b/t oil changes but on an older motor (especially with some miles on it) you might notice it......its not the end of the world. i ad a 1/4 of a quart about every 100 miles in my bmw (it has 220k) and it still runs strong and fast. run thicker oil, don't run synthetic.

michalik_piotr 08-29-2007 10:10 PM

oh, my 22re is supossedly rebuilt and i'm still adding 1/4 of a quart about every 300-400 miles.....and, it passed emissions w/o a car and just a cherry bomb. go figure.

I'm pretty sure my valve steam seals are on its way to going. Smokes alittle bit on crack up and when i first take off but after that runs great.

I would look at that first.were I bothered by the consumption. Have you tried Lucas Oil additive?....seems to be good stuff.

Lol, 'smokes a bit' is burning oil. Not a huge amount though.

That's not something I would worry about. Just top it up every few hundred miles and forget about it until you want to replace valvestem seals.

Running a thicker oil can lower your oil consumption somewhat. If you're using 10w30 try 15w40 diesel or similar and see what happens.

I'd stay away from oil additives though.

corvettelvr73 08-31-2007 09:57 AM

Last oil change I did I put 10w40 in it.

Hey - did you ever get to the bottom of this? I am having the same issue on a 1986 22re w/60k miles. Uses oil like crazy. We lost about two quarts on a 600-mile trip from Boise to Moab.

No smoke ever, though and no leaks on or around the engine and no oil in the coolant. My compression is good on all jugs - 170 or better.

Its a puzzler.

Absolutely! Lucas is good stuff. My old '81 22R would smoke on start ups, or after sitting idle. Started using Lucas and it stopped. There's an additive in Lucas that conditions old seals. Worked on the 22R. Going to add some to my 175K 22RE at the next oil change.
