22r computer with a 22re engine?
I recently bought a 85 4runner and noticed the computer says 22r on it even though my engine is EFI? It has 3 connectors on it. Just wondering if anyone knew if this computer was universal? Thanks. The engine seems to run fine, some small bogging but I believe its TPI related.

22r engines dont have computers, only efi trucks
|
22r's do have computers. for the tranny and ignition and some other things, just not an EFI control.
|
lol, thats not a computer, ur distributer sends a signal to the coil telling it to fire when the engine spins over, not a computer, and ive never delt with toyota automatics in carbed toyotas. but as far as a regular computer for anything other than the trans, it is non existant in carbed toyotas. the fuel system is mechanical, not much diffence than a SBC

manual transmissions dont need computers, and ignition is controlled by the dizzy |
yes 22re computers say 22r on them, confusing.

Thanks guys, the 22R had me confused. Im glad its the right one.

Hate to dissapoint you guys, but the 22r DOES have a computer for emmisions, motor does not need it to run, but it DOES have a computer

dont you hate it when people just spew garbage. |
what years do these 22r motors have "computers" for the emissions? Is'nt all the emissions stuff vacuum controlled by temperature and vacuum switches not an electronic computer?

Thats the emission control thingamabob on the 22r. This is on a '85 2wd truck, its located behind the passenger kick panel just like the ECM on the 22RE trucks. |

I'd like to know where becuase my 87 carbed motor (last year for the carb well at least major production anyway) don't have one. everything emission related is done through BVSV's and temperature switches, the ignition is not computer controlled either, that runs off the dizzy and the coil.
|
it may give a hot here and there but still not a funtioning computer in my eyes. thats like putting MSD on a SBC and calling it a computer, but i see what ur saying, im sure it controls the three things on the carb that require a ground and hot.
|
looks like by the part descriptions this thing really isn't a computer like 85-in-va said. All it looks to be is a very complicated relay.
|
well i hate it when this happens but i was wrong, 22rs do have a computer that controls emissions like eurospec said, i did some research for my own knowledge and hes right, it doesnt exactly work like a efi ecm but it is considered a computer, and if u still dont believe it call ur local auto parts dealer. sorry for miss informing anyone

lol i kinda feel stupid because im a technician, but we dont work on carbureted vehicles in our shop, and as toyota goes i been working on these things for over ten years, never had one i couldnt fix, guess u learn something new everyday

Does the gauge panel has a check engine lite? when i open the ignition swith on my 84 toy carb I dont see any c/e lite come on
|
no CEL on a carbed truck
