1986 22r Intermittent Hard Start, Turns Over, Ignition Related.

My 86 22r 4x4 has been having this weird hard start problem, a few times a week I will try to start the truck and it will just turn over and over but it will nor fire up. When this happens the truck is getting fuel but it is not getting spark, if I go key off on a number of times it will eventually turn on as if nothing were wrong, any ideas would be appreciated, thanks for your time, Kelly.

I have:
-Cleaned grounds on fender well for the coil
-I Was able to only once get some one to turn it over well it was doing this and I pulled a spark plug to check for spark and there was no spark at plug.
- I know there is fuel because when I pump pedal when turning over it will smell really rich and stumble when it finely starts but if I do not pump gas pedal when it finally gets spark it will start normal.

Hard to start

Have you checked to see if your key switch is worn out? Just a thought.

The most common occurrence with a no-spark on the 22R is the ignitor. However, when the ignitor fails to function, it stays that way. It does not become working after whatever-length-of-time. Once it's dead it stays that way.

The ignition system (besides the spark plug wires, spark plugs, distributor cap and rotor) consists of the pickup coil in the distributor, the coil and the ignitor.

You'll need to get some sort of service manual with a wiring diagram and a multimeter, then start the diagnostic procedure for checking power at certain points, including the ignition switch as was already mentioned. The factory service manual does not have any diagnostic procedure for checking the functionality of the ignitor, though.

There is an aftermarket Toyota service manual, I believe it's published by Bentley, that does have a procedure for testing the ignitor.

My fsm details testing power source line in voltage and resister voltage for the igniter. I'd check spark at plugs while in said condition and work backwards from there if no spark. And the carb. Float level good? If the sight glass is more than half full a flooded bowl can cause a hard start situation. Also, connection at the signal generator (pickup in the dizzy). Seems like that could wear thin or wear out and cause an intermittent issue.

Just some thoughts from an idiot...

Idk I had an ignitor work intermittent but it would die 2 minutes later. Coil or wires good? Cap rotor those are. Quick check

Also it is not mentioned very much but on the passenger side kick plannel on the 22r there is a computer that the truck is able to run without just not as good but these have a tendency to crack on the circuit board where the main wires connect which caused me all sorts of weird problems until I re-soldered the connections. Just something else to look into.

Right on. Glad you figured it out. I had the exact same problem. $300 igniter here too. It was the last piece of the ignition system I replaced. My battery and igniter went out at the exact same time. Random. He's feeling way better now. And thanks for the heads up about the cpu. I knew it was there but hadn't heard of the problem you're talking about. I checked it out and it looks to be in pretty good shape.
