1985 4Runner 22RE Auto Shift Problem

Hey, I bought a 1985 4Runner 22RE, with the auto transmission and 135k miles about 4 Months ago. About 2 weeks ago I had a new head put on it. After I got my vehicle back it has a tendency to shift into overdrive. It has the O/D off button, and the transmission works just fine if i shift it kind of like a manual, starting in 1, moving to 2, then to drive with O/D off and then back around highway speed turning it back on. I've tried adjusting the shift cable a bit to no avail. The biggest downside to my problem, is that when i put my foot down expecting it to downshift and accelerate all it does is shift up in to O/D and i lose all my power. I'm not super mechanically inclined, so if there is any information that I didn't include that is relevant please let me know.

I'm wondering if you have a problem in the Normal/Power button there just under the shifter. I know mine is a pain (bad design) but maybe if not in either position you are getting a screwy signal causing the issue.

Make sure the Normal is depressed and fully seated correctly see if that helps any. I know mine was stuck in power and I had to get a new button to fix it. With it in power mode gears would not shift until higher rpms.

Id push the power then the normal and do that a few times finishing with Normal of course see if that helps...

Just put in a 5spd manual transmission and don't look back. The autos were junk in these trucks.

thanks for the advice, i would like to have a 5 speed but its not in the budget right now. now that you mention it, both my norm and pwr buttons are both have depressed, ill head out to Toyota tomorrow and see how much a new button set is. If that doesn't fix it, i might just drop it off and see what they come up with. Thanks!

I swung by my local reputable toyota mechanic today, he took a look for me and suggested that i replace the shift cable as in the past it was improperly tightened and stretched out, i hope this is the final fix to my problem.

So, as it turns out, Toyota has discontinued my shift cable that I need (part # 35520-35060) so i can not get one direct from toyota, i tried rock auto, several other sites that listed it, however when i order one, they email me to notify me that it is out of stock. So if anyone has any idea where i can order that part, please let me know as i would like to get this fixed.

First question is, what size tires are you running on it?

Liadrin Aug 2, 2015 05:00 PM

I'm currently using Goodyear Wrangler Duratrac tires. they're 235.75.r15 in size. the info panel on my door suggests that i use 225.75.r15 i believe, however when my 89 pickup blew up i took these right off and put them on it.

Lots of good info here...

The main "fix" is the cable adjustment and replacing all of the solenoids in the valve body.

I'm really interested to hear how the tire size plays into this, does it mess up the speed from the speed sensor? Whats the fix.

talked to another transmission specialist here where i live, he suggested that it could be the solenoids in the valve body, he should be taking a look at it on wednesday.

Come to think of it I had an odd shifting problem when I first got my 85 4runner. Turned out it was related to the thermostat being stuck open. Car never warmed up and tranny worked weird. Once I replaced that worked fine. I think my problem was it wouldn't go into overdrive until everything got warmed up though.

Sounds more like a bad TPS or out of adjustment, so you're gonna have to do some homework. http://www.4crawler.com/4x4/CheapTricks/TPS/index.shtml

Just got it back from the local transmission guy, he took a look and is convinced that it is not my shift cable, he is on the flip side, pretty sure that it is most likely my throttle position sensor, so now i have to find someone that can diagnose that for me. It's starting to look like potentially the mechanic that changed my head in the first place may have dicked it up some way or another. Thanks for the help though, guys!

I have what i wouldn't precisely call an update, however, since i have received my vehicle back from the transmission guy, the transmission has shifted properly (like it did when i got it at least) so i took it to another mechanic whom i was told was proficient with diagnostics, he took a look and did stuff and thing with the codes and came up with only a couple that he said were more than likely from when they installed the head originally (im not sure how one comes to that conclusion) however right now the transmission works. Not that it is necessarily fixed, but hey, if it works then i guess i dont care what the problem is or how it fixed itself, at least until i have the problem again. i really appreciate your guys suggestions and help. thanks.

Did he push the "normal" button down and now it works normal :)

Liadrin Aug 8, 2015 09:36 AM

yea, but i generally use the pwr button. it gives me about 100 extra lb/ft of horseypowers. with the pwr button depressed i can do 0-110 in 1:56 instead of 1:59. every time someone gets in my vehicle i depress the pwr button and tell them it doubles my horsepower haha.

The power button changes shift rpms. It revs a little higher before changing gears with the power button on. Does the OD light blink? If so you have transmission codes. The shift solenoids work it pairs on and off combinations.
In "D"
1st gear- solenoid 1 on, solenoid 2 off
2nd gear- solenoid 1 on, solenoid 2 on
3rd gear- solenoid 1 off, solenoid 2 on
OD- solenoid 1 off, solenoid 2 off

Transmission

So I have a 1995 Toyota 4 Runner Sr5 v6 manual. I just replaced my clutch and need to refill my transmission. Any suggestions on how much fluid I well need and what kind?

Again, at least check your TPS connector it probably became loose somehow.
