1985 4Runner 22RE Auto Shift Problem

Hey, I bought a 1985 4Runner 22RE, with the auto transmission and 135k miles about 4 Months ago. About 2 weeks ago I had a new head put on it. After I got my vehicle back it has a tendency to shift into overdrive. It has the O/D off button, and the transmission works just fine if i shift it kind of like a manual, starting in 1, moving to 2, then to drive with O/D off and then back around highway speed turning it back on. I've tried adjusting the shift cable a bit to no avail. The biggest downside to my problem, is that when i put my foot down expecting it to downshift and accelerate all it does is shift up in to O/D and i lose all my power. I'm not super mechanically inclined, so if there is any information that I didn't include that is relevant please let me know.

Thanks,
I took it to a couple different mechanics, but it happened to be shifting correctly that day. TPS is my next try. however i am not sure exactly how to check the TPS to see if its functioning or not before i purchase a new one/ have a new one installed. So, if you did have a way to check it and you could send me a link to that or describe how to do it in my garage that would be pretty sweet. thanks.
