It was the wrist pins!
So my truck has been making this racket ever since I had some work done to the motor. I thought it was a rod knock but it's lasted about 12k miles. Had so and so look at it/listen to it/yadda yadda yadda. About 15 times. :chairfall
Anyway, I'm pretty sure it is a problem with wrist pin 1 or 2. I'm getting close to pulling the motor again, and I want to ask how hard it is to plastigage the mains if I pull the pistons out versus bringing the entire block to the shop? I've never used plastigage. Is it difficult for a beginner to be accurate? :eeek: I can see me screwing up and having to pull the motor again. Or having something break when I'm pulling the boat out of the lake(gotta love low range).:pop: Or any advice for pulling the motor out? I really don't want to do it again because it was a pain the first time but I'd rather do things the right way. I replaced a lot of parts so I think the wearoutable parts should be ok. Any thoughts? how do you know its the wrist pins? And if it is stil running fine as it has for 12k miles, why pull it?
Now if you are gonna rebuild it, do it right and pull the motor.. |
The main reason for pulling it again is because after about 20 minutes of driving your ears are ringing like crazy!
It also sounds like it's getting worse i.e. the sound occurs more often, and is louder than ever. I took it back to the guy who did the work, and let's just say I would NOT recommend him to anyone. I've also had many people listen to it and the general consensus is that the noise is coming from the wrist pins. The auto tech professor at school(who rebuilds 22rs basically for a living) said it sounds like wrist pins. I also described the sound to Ted at engine builder and he was also agreeing about the wrist pins. |
i got sort of rachet going on in my engine i was told it was the wrist pins but its anoyying but it just sounds kinda like a grinding sound, i always wonder what the conceqences of not fizing this is but its been doing it several thousand miles so i havnt been worried about it

Grinding? Can you tell where it's coming from? I've got the can of spoons going on and in a bad way. It literally sounds like a can of spoons being shaken.

I got a lot of help on this part from the machine shop, since I was still very new to doing this involved work on my truck back then and seriously doubted my abilities, so I'm not much help with the plastigauge. What about your autotech professor? Should be able to get help from him.
I am surprised no one here is speaking up though. I know there are more than a couple in this area who have rebuilt their own engines. |

SO IT'S NOT THE WRIST PINS! THE MACHINE SHOP I TOOK IT TO PUT THE WRONG PISTONS IN!!!!! :pissed::pissed::pissed:
The guy put in pistons for a 22RE, not a 22R! According to the new machine shop, this would probably drop my compression ratio to about 6:1. No wonder it was gutless. He also screwed up one of the rod bearings so if it didn't blow up for other reasons, it would have eventually thrown a rod too! God I'm pissed right now Don't go to Lloyd's Service in Fort Collins. I'm normally fairly laid back but I've gotten raked over the coals by this guy. He's rude to boot. Bad work, wrong parts, hard to get along with... the list goes on but anyway, I'm excited to have a truck that works properly soon. AMS is a great shop to work with in my experience. Craig down there does excellent work, is friendly and reasonable in both money and how he runs the business. OK, I'm done ranting now. Thanks for listening. |

No wonder it was gutless. um oooops, looking at wrong posters video, but while I am at it, it's not neccesarily a 22r vs 22re mistake it's a pre-85 and post-85 22r mistake this is why, if I am gonna have someone else do my work for me, ONLY I ORDER parts. PS, if this guy actually did what he was supposed to and attempted to zero-deck the block with the pistons he would have caught the fact he put the wrong ones in as the pre-85 blocks at quite a bit different in deck heights |
man, i don't think I'd react in the same way a lot of those people did if i took one between the legs like that.
the second shop did that, but clearly not the first doofus. Man, if you get paid to do stuff, at least do it well. |
