Will this dash work in my truck???

this is the dash I want
https://www.yotatech.com/forums/f189...sh-etc-198087/ I have a 1980 standard 4x4. the dash is toast. I would like to put and SR5 dash in. I can modify the heat controls but will the guages work? How does toyota hook up a tack in an SR5? Is it the same as an aftermarket tack?? thanks mark |
when I did my SR5 cluster swap into my old /80 , it was all plug and bolt in .. unfortunatly , i just dont remember what year I pulled the swaped pieces out of .. sorry ... but all of the plugs were on the harness already ..
(I did this about 20 years ago , thats why I dont remember ) . |
as long as you are using a 79-81 dash to swap in, it will work fine...nothing to change. the plugs on the rear of both clusters are the same. all there will be is a speedometer cable and two round plugs, one smaller than the other. plug and play. i did this on my 81 and it works fine. its a good idea to change out all the bulbs for new ones while it's out.

since I do not have a tack now how can I hook that up? somebody told me
quote "the guage cluster will not work if it has rectangled plug ins, and from the look of the front it does, they changed the guage clusters from august 82 through late 83" Since the one I am looking at is an 82 I will try to find out if the plugs are round or square |
The front of that cluster is definitely the "old" style, though. It should have round plugs in the back but yeah, it's a good idea to find out for sure. The way I ran a tach was to run a wire to one of the plugs coming off the coil. Very easy. There are a bunch of "sr5 guage swap" threads out there.

if your truck is a 79-81 and you are using a cluster out of a 79-81 truck, then the plugs will be round and the tach will work..no extra wire will be needed. the 82-83 clusters have rectangular plugs and would involve much more work than it is worth just for a tach.

ok thanks

Oh, and yeah, the dash is exactly the same. I've got a 79 or 80 dash in my 83. The only difference was that my 83 had little side vents in the top of the dash, which the older ones didn't. So I just carefully cut holes in the dash so I could have air there.
|
yea....i'm not sure on the complete dashes fitting between the years....i was just talking about the gauge clusters.
|
well they were all 4 cylinders, so no need to talk about anything other than a 4 cylinder and confusing people. and we've already answerd the question from people that have actually done it, not that somebody told us. it is plug and play if you have the same year dash as the truck.
