Will this bumper fit mine?

It says RWD only. Rest of the specs are right. I think it'll fit.
I mean, it's a bumper. What does that have to do with RWD or 4WD?
:dunno:

It looks right but heck if I know. If no one else tells you otherwise, I say at $63 with free shipping go for it. You can always sell it for more on Craigslist if it doesn't fit. I once noticed a 4Runner on here that had a 2nd generation bumper on a 1st gen and it looked okay.

tditoyota 09-07-2013 02:51 PM

I looked into that one time as well. I could not for the life of me find a 4wd front bumper. I think that the mounting is different because the 2wd and the 4wd do have differences. I decided not to do it because I was pretty positive it wasn't going to work. But maybe someone on here knows differently.

If you do get it, could you let us know if it fits. I need a front bumper really bad.

I have a front bumper oem from a 84 22r 4x4 I'll let go super cheap plus shipping. I can post a pic later when I get home.

I'm pretty sure the 84 bumper won't mount on the 81. You can buy a weld on bracket to fit a later year bumper, but our first gens have a different mounting setup. With this bracket, I think you can mount the next generation aftermarket bumpers.

Yea, I put it on here cause I was wondering if anyone had tried one of those bumpers on a 4WD.

84dreamyoda 09-08-2013 10:23 AM

If I get time I will try to take down my bumper on the 83 and put the 84 oem bumper up to see how it mounts. I'll try to get pictures. Be nice to know either way I think.

That would be awesome 84dreamyoda. We'll see once and for all what the differences are.

That bumper will not fit your truck. A 2WD truck has different mounting brackets than a 4WD as tditoyota stated. I thought you would be able to use the 83 version that I have (which I purchased from that website) but it seems something changed between 81 and 82 so it won't work from what I can tell. Also a bumper from a 84 will not bolt right up to your truck. Modifications to make it fit would be necessary.

The 4x4 bumper from my 83 had 4 mounting bolts. Two in the front to the tabs on the frame crossbar, and down through the top of the frame. Dave's offroad has a kit that will weld over the whole front of the 79-83 frame and provides mounting points that mimic the 84-88 style so you can use marlin or trail gear bumpers as a bolt on option. I don't see why those wouldn't also allow you to use a stock bumper from the second gens on yours.

The mounting brackets are different from '81 to '82. I know this from messing up on an order from wabfab. If you want a durable bumper go to a fab shop and have one built for your truck. I looked around for a while and couldn't find much worth buying, bought the trail gear bumper from wabfab that turned out to be an '82-'84 bumper. I called trail gear and they told me the tabs on the bumper should match up to the body mounts on an '81 and you weld the winch plate to the front crossmember. The tabs are off by about 1/3" in total so either way I am visiting a fab shop or buying a welder to get my bumper on the truck. There is a difference between 2wd and 4wd, a 4wd frame should be able to flex more.

I have a smithy built bumper for an '81 that was in a small accident; the tabs need to be welded back in place. Pm me if you are interested.
