Which type of side view mirrors?

Hey guys, I have recently got a 1982 4x4 sr5 pickup. It has aftermarket mirrors on the doors. Where I need help is which style for my truck was the original? The doors have the tapped holes in it for the longer stainless steel type mirrors. But I see photos of the same year truck with the smaller black or chrome mirrors. Anyone know anything about these two types? Which do you prefer? Thanks in advance for any help.

I believe they came with either depending on trim/accessory package

Yes, the western style mirrors were an "upgrade" that were installed by the dealer. They were an option if you look in the '83 catalogue. Usually the smaller sport mirrors were on the 4x4s, while the bigger western style mirrors were on the work/ hauling 2x4s. I just switched over to the smaller sport mirrors for several reason. Less weight on the doors, less oppurtunity to side swipe an object, less rust in the tapped holes/mirror, less wind drag, and personally they look better.. The big windows are great for hauling. Unfortunately i had to sand and paint the area where the extra holes were but it was worth it to me.. I have nice set of the bigger mirrors if you're interested. If you need pics let me know.

Cool to know, and I am interested in your mirrors. Although, since I am new here, I do not know if I can get pm's yet. So if you want to send the photo's, give it a try. If that doesn't wok, just send them to
gmb5@att.net thanks

Definately a personal preference, myself I like the look of the larger western style on the 4x4, along with the better visibility the larger mirrors affords.....

I agree that the big mirrors are better for sight. My truck came with the small ones and I got a similar style from an Isuzu Rodeo, same shape but about twice the size. I had to drill one new hole to mount them but I can see better.

Hijack alert. I have the western style mirrors and they keep moving around after I set them to were I like them and way to tightens that up donut doesn't move around. Just driving around town the will start to angle way out of where i set them and I am constantly needed to stick my hand out an readjust.
