timing chain tensioner
 

I have had a problem with a 1981 22r motor rebuild, it has to high of oil pressure on start up. I was searching last night and, i came across a sight that said the bolts that hold on the chain tensioner have some sort of built in oil passage, Is this true? I have built this motor from a basket case and my bolts do not have these, also I am using a 20r timing chain cover will this work? This is my first toyota.

Luckily I had both 20 and 22r engines torn apart right now!

I just pulled off the timing chain tensioner and no there is no oil passage in the mounting bolt. Just one in the nipple that goes into the indent of the engine.

As for the timing cover I'm not 100% on. I am wondering the same thing. Both look the same and have the same parts on them. Neither would make your oil pressure change. First thing I would take a look at is how much oil did you actually put in the engine?

Where you the same one who was blowing oil filters off your block because of high pressure before? That was a while ago...I would use the right parts for the right truck, there things that change. I believe that part of the reason for that passage is to allow the chain tensioner to maintain tension, since it does work on oil pressure.

20r and early 22r pre84 timing chains cover are the same. The bolts are normal no oil passages.

One problem is that certain oil passages in the block need to be blocked off by allen head bolts and some left unblocked. When you take a block in to a shop to get cleaned up and bored sometimes they take these bolts off so they can clean the oil passages out. Im not 100% sure but i think i blocked off 2 on the bottom of the block and 1 behind the timingcover.

I concure .. 20r and 22r timing componets and covers are interchangable .. or should I say .. you can put a 20r duel row chain in a 22r (only up to /84) ... so yes the cover is the same .

as for the over pressure .. the oil pump has a pressure relief .. I would think the spring is hooped/clogged maybe the piston is siezed .. something like that ! ... I would replace the oil pump .
