Sputtering under load
Well the yota was running fine until today with sputtering under load above 40mph, it wouldn't take any gas. I pulled one of the plugs and it is dark so I know they need to be replaced. But since the truck sat for over 2 years would the carb likely need cleaning if it ran fine for 300 miles this week? I'm used to the fuel injected world.

Sputtering under load could be caused by bad plugs and wires. I would give it a full tune up before anything else, especially if the plugs are old.
It could be something in the carb, but I would start with the basic tune-up. Properly gapped plugs, wires, cap, and rotor. New fuel and air filters, a valve adjustment and ignition timing check would also be a good idea. It would not hurt to clean out the throat of the carb with some carb cleaner at the same time, but I would wait to rebuild it. |
Plugs and a shot of carb cleaner did the trick, still need to do the rest of the tuneup but it is now at least driveable and its smooth and enough power. I keep thinking that plugs last 100k on the thing instead of 20k.
