Rear Tires wont move
 

Hey guys,

Im putting together a 1979 4x4 pickup and its been sitting in my driveway and i need to move and roll it back farther down my driveway but the rear axle/tires wont budge. it seems to be in gear somehow but i made sure the e brake was off, transmission in neutral and transfer case. Would it be better if i take off the driveshaft then roll it?

Depends what is locked up. Can you rock the truck forward and back about 6 inches? That would be possible if the lockup was in the transmission. I kind of doubt the transmission would get stuck in gear from sitting. It's full of oil, not likely to rust. Was the truck parked for a long time with the parking brake engaged? If it doesn't roll at all then the parking brake is probably rusted and stuck on. Removing the driveshaft won't fix that. Release the parking brake lever and see if the crank arms on the backside of the backing plates is retracting. You might be able to tap them back in. If that still doesn't work remove the wheels and hit the outside of the drum with a big hammer to hopefully break the shoes free from the drum.

Drop the driveshaft at the diff takes 4 bolts.
if it doesn't move you know the drum brakes seized

I cant rock it at all. I actually tried to hook up a tow rope and drag it thinking that the brakes were seized but that wasnt the case. The parking brake wasnt engaged and the truck only been sitting in my driveway for about 2-3 months. I recently had the two front tires on a dolly and the back tires on the road when I trailed it back to my house. I will try to remove the driveshaft and see if that works if not ill get the e brake disconnected or yank the tire off and hammer the brake drum. I will try your solutions and i will let you know

In damp conditions, I have seen drum brakes stuck in less than a week.

Now that sounds about right. Living in Hawaii and being less than 500 yards away from the ocean could mean something. I will try to see what i can do. Thank you
