Post your gas mileage 1st Gen Truck (79-83 ONLY!!)
I was just wondering what mileage everyone was getting with their first gens
My 22r, weber carb, rv cam, 450" lift springs, pacesetter header, 87 octane gas, 39.5's, 5.71 gears was getting 14-16 in town never had it out on the open road anyone else care to share with us |
14 in town, 17-20 on the highway. Obviously I've got some emissions or carb issues though, 'cause I've got a rebuilt engine, mild rv cam, rebuilt carb, all tuned up as far as new plugs, wires, disty and all that, and I'm running 30x9.50's, so pretty close to stock..

I really have no idea....YET....but then again, I really don't care either because it's a first gen and it looks badass, and most people that see it wish it was theirs.:smokin:

I get around 22. High test, 22R long block/20R head and mid range cam, somedays I forget i'm driving up a mountain in it.

Well I have to admit that my gas gauage dont work so i keep track a little more close. I am running 4o's with stock gearing for a 80. 350 chevy with 350 tranny and stock tansfer case with 650 carb. My odometer begging last summer was 107803. The end of summer was 108625. Differance of 822.5 miles on my odometer. I used 129.6 gallons. Maybe someone can compute. I think it comes out to be about 9 mpg, But like what was said who cares its a 1st gen toyota 4x4. The look on their face is priceless!!!

Yea 1st Gens are definitely not green cars by any means...Which is fine with me..15-20mpg hwy 10-15 city

1980 flat deck conversion with very stock vacuum controls (although vacuum advance is disconnected). The $200 special gets me around town almost every day these past two weeks and I have to estimate 15 mpg with gentle local driving - maybe a little better but no worse. I think I could push closer to 20 with the vacuum advance and a new carburetor (this one clearly is pulling air at the throttle shaft),
For the record the flat deck was purchased purely to fend off Uhaul bills for hauling greasy car parts and motorcycles. The conversion was done before I bought the truck, and while dorky, is clearly not bad for hauling stuff. To that end $35 per month in insurance is a lot cheaper than hitting Uhaul two or three times a month. My buddy in high school had a 1L Toyota Diesel - an '81 if memory serves me. He tracked his fuel mileage religiously and normally returned high 30s and low 40s mpg. I honestly don't think he was blowing smoke - just a stripped down 2wd 5 speed truck and a lot of long straight back country highways. That was one nice truck - original AZ truck with under 100k miles and the only problem being a little paint fade. Off topic, I bought an '85 Jeep Cherokee diesel project as my "economical" car. I have poured 2 grand and a lot of blood, sweat, and tears into the project and honestly don't expect it to do much better than 30mpg at best. Not awful for a 4x4 though. I anticipate another few hundred dollars in minor repairs before it's "done". A diesel Cherokee does turn a lot of heads especially when you tell people it's one of the originals... |
I get 22mpg on the highway. Really never checked it in town. Bone stock 20R. Running 33's.

i get around 6mpg but that is all trail time, it dont get on the road much. good thing its only a 4 banger :(

16 city, 18 combined/modern freeway speeds, once saw 20 after a full day of moutain driving and a little big of wheeling. My average speed couldn't have been much more than 50 and was only in low range for a couple miles or so.
1982 4x4, stock except for some slightly larger-than-stock big o xt's. |
11 in town, 19 after I turned the fuel screw in. Too bad it dies all of the time now... Maybe I should turn back a little...

You know the float level can really make a difference in this department more than the idle mixture. I went from getting 12 - 16 mpg on my first 1980 to getting about 20 - 25 after rebuilding the carb and setting the float level down a bit. I had wired in a switch to the idle circuit cut solenoid too so if I had a long trip to go I would cut the idle circuit out. Never had any knocking doing this and I could average 28 on the highway (5th gear, 65 mph gentle driving). |
how many of you are calculating your mileage with larger tires? less tire revolutions per mile = less miles on the odometer.... showing much worse mileage then you are really getting.

please help i have a 4wd 81 with no odometer and want to know what kind of mileage in gettin |
my speedo isn't really right so it messes it all up. but i went about 65 miles on less then a quarter tank, 45 to 75 over mtn passes, 35 in tires with stock 4.10 gears and a 4 speed. i also get around 15 to 20 around town

first gen gas mileage
i have a 81 pickup all stock with 30s and a 22r with a weber carb i have no odometer and it seems like it runs out of gas pretty quick
can someone please help what kind of gas mileage are some of you with the 22r getting |
I have to tell you, I bought a 82 a couple of months back. The rig was in fair shape when I got it. I did a complete gasket overhaul as well as a carb rebuild. The compression was great across the board. I filled the tank last week and I am amazed how fast the thing goes to E. It takes $35.00 to fill and that is Humboldt CA. gas prices ($3.40 a gallon.) It seems to me this thing is eating gas fast. I need to pay closer attention to the actual milage. I do agree with you that these little trucks empty out pretty quick for whatever reason.

ya well one reason is the gas tank is only 13 gallons :chairfall
but mine have bad compretion which dont help oh ya and its running on 31/2 sparkplugs |
yes the gas tank is small. My compression is great, the carb is basically brand new, and the motor is strong and I am still amazed how fast I go through a tank. I do share your sentiment 81yota.
