New member and first-time Toyota owner here
Hello all, name's Mike, I'm in the KC area. I just bought my first vehicle not made by one of the Big Three domestic automakers, a 1983 Toyota Hilux SR5 4x4. It's pretty much stock except for the wheels and roll/nerf bars. It has 127,000 miles on it, hardly any rust, and runs like a champ. Only took $1800 and a 3-hour drive there and back to get her home! Anyway, here's a couple pics for now and I'll be looking forward to the discussions here!

Yeah, the front bumper ain't doing the rest of the truck a bit of justice. Anyone have plans drawn out for a plate bumper? Something rugged but a simple design would be cool...
I hope to someday have the body painted OD green and the roll bars and wheels black to match the bumpers and nerf bars. I've already checked prices to have the entire thing Linexed and we ain't even going there with it for the $2800 they want.

As far as I know, those are the original miles and there have been no rebuilds. It came from Cali a few years ago so the rust is minimal and supposedly only used for utility purposes and occasionally to get to work. I really had no idea what I was buying-- I was looking for a small 4x4, saw this ad 5 minutes after it was posted, and showed it to a friend who is familiar with these old Yotas. He said if I didn't go buy that truck he would, so I called on the ad and gave the guy his asking price to hold it for me until the next day.
As for mods, it's just a hunting rig for me so the OD green paintjob would be cool, and hopefully I can find or make a nice but inexpensive winch bumper for the front. Black powdercoat on the outlaw wheels and roll bar, some KC lights, and I'm definitely gonna hook up my Galaxy CB in there. I really don't plan to get too crazy with it but only being $1800 in, Mama ought to let me play around a little bit.

For your first Toyota you certainly started with the best. I'm sure you will enjoy. Congrats on your purchase. With your luck you better be playing the lottery.

Nice truck!
Very hard to tell in the photo but it looks like it's been painted? And maybe some rust covered up along the seam on the rear part of the side of the bed. But that might just be the photo quality.
Either way, it's in a lot better shape than my truck!

83, it does have some Krylon on it where they sanded down some surface rust. The truck ain't perfect, just really nice for it being 27 years old. The interior is aging, there are dings on body panels, the left side of the front bumper is pushed in, and the top of tailgate is weak from stepping on it, but it was only $1800 so I can't complain. I don't think it would take much to get her back looking good, just gotta decide what I wanna do and then convince the old lady that its worth doing...
Yoder, thanks for the links and welcome! I've been doing a lot of reading on here and Pirate. Lots of potential with these trucks and thankfully the info is deep!

Oh yeah. Mine was in MUCH worse shape when I bought it, and I paid very close to what you did, so you got a great deal and that's a great looking truck. I was just making sure you had seen that, and checking to see if it was just the photo, or really there.
Good luck with it! They're great trucks.
