Need help deciding on engine & tranny for my '82 pickup!
Hey everybody, I have a 1982 4x4 SR5 pickup that has over 360K miles on it. Yes, you read that right, over 360 THOUSAND. It still runs good but has lost some power, which is to be expected. But I need info from anyone who is knowledgable on this subject. I would like to know how big of an engine I could drop into this truck. I was thinking about putting a V6 in it to save some on gas mileage. I also need to start thinking about a new tranny. I like the L50 but I know it has at least one bad bearing and was considering a rebuild from MarlinCrawler.com. If I were to put a larger engine I figured a new tranny would be a good idea also. SO ANYONE WHO HAS DONE THIS PLEASE GIVE ME SOME IDEAS! Thanks guys!

i don't think you're gonna get better mileage with a V6. even rebuilding what you've got will probably give you a significant boost in power and economy.
any swap other than a stock engine is going to be a lot of work, time, money, and money(not a typo).
if it's your driver, i'd get a later model('85-95) 22R or 22RE engine and rebuild that(cheaper, and better designed head = more power)...as for transmissions, you can get an L52-HD from marlin, which is much better than the L50, and send yours in for a core.

The biggest limitation for a motor swap is the transmission in older trucks since you are limited to a 22r or 22re or 22rte because it has a once piece bellhousing and it isn't removable.
Well as soon as you get a different transmission in there such a as a G54 or W56 then you have a removable bellhousing then you can swap in a 3RZ 2.7l motor or a supra 5MGE or 7MGE motor.
If you want a Toyota 3.4L motor then you will need to swap in a R151 transmission.

thanks guys! I think I'll have to just try and find a 22re and put that in since I don't have a ton of money to spend. Also, do either of you know of any inexpensive ways to add alittle more horespower to these old trucks? I'm also in the process of finding a good 3-4 suspension lift, know of any good companies? thanks

a 22R-E is a drop-in fit, but the issue is wiring, and you also have to rig up a high pressure fuel system for the EFI.
even a freshly rebuilt engine is going to be a night and difference from what you've got now...
