Is my starter going out? Recommendations please

Hi guys,

so I've been driving my new 82 for a few days while also doing general maintenance like fluids and grease. Well, anyway, tonight I came out of the store and hit the starter and got the grind. Like keying the starter while it's running.
do It did it 3 times in a row as I tried 3 quick tries then sat saying a couple 4 letter words for 30sec. Tried it again and fired right up?
then when I got home I turned it off and it fired right up again a few min later.
whatdo you guys recommend?

thanks

Start by taking it out and inspecting the starter and ALL flywheel gears. Also testing the action of the solenoid plunger while off the vehicle.

what's the easiest way to test out of the vehicle? I'm assuming using a 12v battery to test but what would be the best way to do it? Thanks

Have an assistant hold the starter still,
Jumper cable positive to positive screw/stud terminal on starter solenoid,
Jumper cable negative to mounting ear / housing,
Energize starter solenoid with 1/4-inch female spade connector (like this) connected to jumper cable positive.

With out a jig or bench vise, have someone (heavy) stand on it while it's laying on the ground braced against a wall. Three points of contact it's going to want to spin axial and rotate lateral.

I'm going to pull it and bring it in to a huge starter and alternator shop. They have one in stock and will also test mine for free.

My experience has always been that when it starts grinding, it's time to replace/rebuild it.

It has been too cold lately but I did start it 2 more times today with no issues but I am going to pull it.

when I looked at it the cable looks like crap could that cause this?

I'm not sure, but bad connection could cause a problem, too. Maybe it's not really grinding but oscillating (quickly turning and stopping) because the motor is not getting enough power.

yeah I'm not sure. It was almost a grind but sort of a buzz or whatever sound. Can you see that cable it looks like it was pinched and is exposed.

usually auto part places only sell the 2 foot pieces I will have to measure it up.

That's not OEM. Looks like they could get or didn't have a big enough ring terminal so they split half the cable out and taped it up.

Parts store will have various lengths from 1-4', maybe longer.

Start with the cable, maybe fix the leaks they don't go well with electrical stuff.

All that water is road spray. I took that pic not long after I got home.
but yeah I want to replace it!

Looks like it, too. There should be a rubber boot over that.
Yeah, no choice but to remove and inspect the starter and connections then test it off the truck.

It'll just keep getting worse & worse till you're stranded one day. I've had them start grinding and last a few months, grinding off & on. At some point, it just grinds.

Definitely try cleaning up that connection, I agree. Luckily starters are pretty cheap.

For 22RE-able, 1.0 kW starter had been discontinued, but 1.4kW one plugs and plays.
Got "28100-35060-84 REMAN STARTER" with Toyota warranty from Toyotapartsdeal.com
Hope it works with yours, too.
Note: If u buy reman OEM store may only honor OEM for core refund.

Thinking he meant the cable

95yoda 01-18-2018 11:22 AM

Okay so I pulled the starter today. Wish I didn't have a charcoal canister, would have been easier for my big hands to access the top bolt. Anyway it's out along with the cable.
the teeth on the flywheel and starter look fine. Although I only was able to see the teeth viewable from where the starter came off.
I thought about using a ratchet to turn engine over but can't get to it with radiator shroud in place.

I am bringing the starter into a big starter rebuild shoo near me to check it out. They have a reman nippendenso on the shelf they said. Would that be a good starter?

Thanks
