making my 82 survive
hey im lookin for some suggestions to make my 82 see the magic 300000 miles its at 259000 now and runs like a champ. today was my day off so i went to pep boys and bought royal purple oil and oil filter and a new air filter, the oil and oil filter was on sale for 50 bucks for all of it, and man that RP oil filter is huge! :shocked: it was like twice the size of the napa one that was on there, i guess you do get what your paid for hahaha, anyways just seein if anyone has any suggestions on what else can be done to make sure it has a long life before i'm forced to rebuild.

Regular oil changes, go easy on the engine until it warms up, make sure it stays tuned up (timing correct, valve clearances), make sure the carb is working correctly and you aren't running really lean or rich...of course the engine is only a small part of it. Make sure all greaseable points are greased on the chassis, change the tranny, t-case & gear box oils.
If you're at that mileage, you've got a good shot! My truck never had a chance. Pretty much completely rebuilt at 170,000. I'm sure I missed some stuff but it's early... |
my 82 hit 409,000 and now i am just rebuilding it with all new everything.....motor, cab mounts, floor, rockers interior, patched the chassis(hopfully it holds hehe) and i am rebuilding all the diffs, tranny, t-case, giving it all new paint and then soon as it is back on the road.....imma swamp the little bugger sooo bad, that even my friends 4x4 dodge cummins wont pull it out

I dont even know what the mileage is of my 79 but I bet its off the chart everything has been replaced now except the frame and cab. Its running a 1987 22R, W54, 84 front axle, 88 rear axle, even the instrument cluster is out of an 83 sr5 with tach and tripometer LOL
How did you guys keep track my odo starts over at 99,999 must have had the truck since birth. Good going on changing out the blood on yer yota now you'll make it for sure! |

That instrument cluster in your photo isn't an 83. It's probably a '79-81, or maybe 82. My '83 cluster looks like Yotaboys. When they changed the style, they gave them an extra digit.
Looks like maybe you got it out of a 2wd truck, too? I like factory tach because the thiefs kept stealing my cool autogauge tach by ripping off whatever it was mounted too :saw: since the factory tach isnt cool for theifs its cool for me cause it stays put. |
The top one is an '82/83. Bottom is what yours looks like. Round plugs on yours, rectangle on mine.

I think everything else from the speedo cable to how it mounts in the dash are the same. Personally I like the look of yours much better. I just sold one like that but really wish I could have made it work in my truck. I found an '83 SR5 cluster though and I do really like it. Yours has a more old school look to it, though. I agree, the full odometer is nice, especially on a Toyota! Getting off topic though! Treat that thing nice, do regular maintenance, get it on the highway now and then (if you do mostly around town driving) to burn out the gunk that gets built up, and you're hopefully good! |
