Leaking around windshield

Hi All. This is my 1st post..

I have a 1983 2x2. A lot of water comes in somewhere around the dash and pools on both sides of the floor pan. I'm about 90% sure it's some small rust holes around the windshield seal. (I taped them up one year and it was a lot drier.) However, a friend of mine thinks it's leaking where the chrome trim is pulling away from the rubber windshield gasket. To me, that trim looks like it's set right into the rubber seal and doesn't do jack. It looks like decoration on top of rubber, but maybe I'm wrong. I'm betting you guys can tell me.

This ridiculous thin strip of chromed plastic. Does it serve any purpose other than to break up the black outline of the windshield gasket?

Pay no attention to the electrical tape. That was supposed to help keep it dry while it was in the shop recently.

you most likely have rust holes under the weather strip .. the chrome piece is a "lock strip" /decoration

The chrome and rubber gasket are superficial. The super-strong urethane adhesive used to adhere glass to body metal creates a very strong seal. The problem is rusting around that seal, hastened by the moisture and debris that the trim traps.

Roughly, it looks like this. I left the trim off on mine.

What was hiding under the trim when I removed mine...

Thanks!

Thanks, guys. That's very helpful. We have a few dry days in our forecast that I'll use to treat the rust and get it sealed until I can do something more permanent.

Maybe I am mistaken, but I thought 1983 and earlier trucks had a rubber windshield gasket and 1984 and up had the urethane adhesive for sealing.

In ether case, the "chrome" does not seal.
