Installing a crane HI 6 s ignition on 82 4x4

Wassup guys and fellow yota lovers. I just bought a crane HI 6 S -- not a HI 6 -- for my 82 yota 4x4 truck. I also have the LX-91 coil and an msd 8910 tach adapter. I cant get the thing to work. can someone tell me how to hook the thing up or tell me that i bought the wrong part, its carburated not EFI. I need to know where the red and white wires coming tfrom the distributor go and all. PLEASE HELP ME !!!!!!!!

THANK YOU ONE AND ALL!!!!!!

The instructions I gave you previously for wiring a Crane HI6 will not work with a Crane HI6 S unit. The HI6 S unit is designed for Ford, Chevy, Etc. Fuel Injection Systems and from what I researched you can not use the HI6 S unit on a carb model system.

I am. You MUST retain the stock ignitor though. Pretty sure ( I didn't try it yet ) that you cannot trigger it directly off the distributor.

Actual install starts here: https://www.yotatech.com/forums/f199...l#post51651310

Now this is for my 87 I do not know if that 82 is the same ignitor or not. But this will give you an idea.

Great write up xxxtrene22r. This should be very helpful to people wanting to install Crane's Ignition systems on their trucks.

Been working flawlessly as well. I hooked it up in a way I can switch right back to OEM if that box/coil fails. Only thing that would fail in the system would be the ignitor that would get me stuck, otherwise it's a 1 minute trail repair.

Made quite a bit of difference in town with throttle response, but the engine is rebuilt with a weber and a header and bored 20 over with a cam. So I don't know how much of an improvement if any this is gonna make on an older stock engine.

I did open up the plug gap slightly as well. But have not switched the plug wires, but I did have to get a different coil wire. The OEM one wasn't gonna work on the crane coil. Off hand, I do not remember which one got.

On a side note, The MSD units are a much better unit. And if I were to pay full price for one, it would the MSD over the Crane. But this thing cost me very little because it was used and a member on here, couldn't get it to work on a 3vz. For the price I paid, it was worth the gamble.

Hello xxxtreme22r. Forgive me if this is a personal message-I really don't know if it is or if this is being posted to the forum. I have a question though. on the diagram you provided (THANK YOU!), it shows a brown wire coming from the hi6s box. Now is this the brown wire coming from the MAP sensor bundle?

Let us know if you get it working. There is a few other options on this box (like the staging / anti-theft) limiter. It's not listed in that above diagram.

Man, I can't thank you enough for putting that diagram up here to help me out. I'm soooo grateful. Sheeeeez, No comparison to stock. I Just put a new motor in. 390 miles so far Built lower end with new head, Offenhauser intake,WAY OLD weber 40 dfav made in Spain that works awesome,Hedman header. Nothing fancy really. (By the way the old motor worked fine when I pulled it and it had 365,000+ miles on it). I am interested to ALL the options available for the HI 6s if you got them. Once again I appreciate your help xxxtreme22r. My hats off to you!

Hi everyone. That crane HI 6s box works great in my 82 yota . BIG improvement in mid-range power. Hey,xxxtreme22r, you said there were other options for this particular box. Do you have that info handy? Once again I thank you for bailing me out. I appreciate a lot.

I forgot to mention there is at least two versions of tis box and they way the wiring is done. The options are the same as well as the wire colors. Mine was meant to be plug and play with a GM car and had the weatherpack connectors already on it. And since you mentioned the MAP sensor wiring, I am gonna assume you have that one.

I don't know if you seen this or is the same one you have but all the options are listed in this: http://www.cranecams.com/uploads/ins...s/90006320.pdf

This is the other instruction sheet if yours doesn't have plug and play connectors: http://static.summitracing.com/globa...-6000-6300.pdf

NOTE: The staging/theft limiter I don't believe can be used at the same time as the normal high rev limiter due to the fact you have to set the rotary dials at a lower setting.

Any other questions feel free to ask, I'll try to answer them.

I had a question. I'm certain by now you know all about using a GM 4 pin module in place of the toyota igniter. I wanted to know if you or anyone can tell me if there is a noticeable difference in performance between say an accel brand or dyna mod and a cheap $25 unit available at autozone. Although I have the crane box, I wanted to mount one in my truck for backup and wanted the besy one I could find. It's just a circuit board I think and am not sure spending $50 or more on a unit is dumb if it does the exact same thing a cheap unit can do. Thank you

Whats up xxxtreme22r. First I want to thank you yet again for your help. Second, I have a another question about the crane hi6s box. Can it be used WITHOUT the factory igniter? Maybe with a tach adapter? My igniter burned out and I still have the crane box and didn't really want to buy a new one. Thank you

I don't think so. I didn't try it, but pretty sure it won't accept the yota's distributor signal like the MSD 6AL will.

Whats up everyone. I have one more question about the crane hi6s box. DOES ANYONE KNOW IF IT USES A SQUARE WAVE TRIGGER SIGNAL TO OPERATE IT? WILL THE MSD 8509 WORK IN PLACE OF THE FACTORY IGNITER? 1982 toyota 4x4 carb.

thank you
