How to tell what Tranny you have?

I would like to know what tranny I have in my 22r 2wd 83 p/u It is a 4speed I would like to drop it out and put a 5 speed tranny since I drive around 55-65 alot would love to have a 5 speed. If someone could tell me how to find out what tranny I have and what would be the easiest tranny to put in.:parts:

If you have an 83, and it's a 4spd, you probably have an L50. DO you know if the shifter goes in the top of the trans or is there an external linkage on the passenger side? The linkage will be on the outside of course. That should get you started.

Also I think you mean L40? cause a L50 is a 5spd not a 4spd. Looking tomorrow had some stuff to do

That's my bad, found this for you:

Type, Year, Behind, # of Gears, Low Gear
L43 1979-1980 20R 4 3.67
L45 1981-1982 22R 4 3.93
L50 1981-1982 22R 5 3.93
L52 1983 22R 5 3.93

I am building a 1980 4x4 for a friend. It came with a 20r and a 4 spd. We will be swapping out the locked up 20r for a 22r. I have a 5 spd and transfer case out of a 1985 that we would like to put in it. I think it would be easier to put in both tranny and case but thought I would get some expert opinions. The 4 spd has the linkage on the side of the tranny if it matters.

85 transmission is gonna be 4" longer. Need to move the crossmember back. Lengthen front driveshaft and shorten rear..

He is going to drive this alot of miles as a dd and is looking to help fuel economy. Will the 5 spd be worth the trouble? The body is off to restore the frame so now is the time to do it if.

If he's going for daily driver, lots of miles and fuel economy, absolutely the 5 speed is worth the trouble. I don't know anything about the 2wds, but 4wd wouldn't come with a 4 speed stock. Not in a manual, anyways. Somebody swapped one in when the 5 speed went out if it has one. Like the post above shows, 83's didn't come with 4 speeds.

But like I said, I don't really know about 2wds.

Thanks for the help. The owner wants to go with the 5 spd so thats the direction were heading. I may have the driveshafts out of the 85 if they will work but either way here we go. Thanks again.
