How do you remove Front Windshield
 

Does anybody have a good trick to remove the front windshield without breaking it. I am rebuilding my 80 pickup and need replace the front windshield gasket. I have heard that you can get it out using a rope or piano wire, but don't know how to do that. Any help would be appreciated.

cut the rubber sealer with a box knife blade al away around the window then in a corner cutout as much sealer as you can and at a angle try to poke the panio wire or guitar wire through it takes 2 people to use the wire if you get the wire through as a team move the wire back in forth like a saw to cut through the gasket

So there will be sealer inside the gasket? For some reason I thought it was just a compression fitting on the 80, but I guess that makes sense. Do you know what sealer is used to put the window back in? I have some urethane stuff that you have to heat up and use a electric caulk gun, like they use in the newer windows, or is it a different type?

3M makes very good products this window has been in for 6 months and no problems it is air and water tight.

Sounds good, I will look for these at my auto part supplier.

i just had a guy come out and install a new winshield for like 150 bucks labor and glass. he used this special knife with a handle to pull it because the ashesive isnt easy to cut. they they used an eletric gun with this black stuff that was really sticky , but this put this stuff aroudn the edges on the glass where it would seal, it was in a bottle like pvc pipe cement. if you have chrome peices around it good luck get em back on, they arent easy.

I tried to remove my windshield the other day...i put a 2 foot crack in it. Woops!! O well, it was messed up anyways. lol

Um, well I installed a window myself and didn't use any sealant because the gasket is self sealing. You don't actually need any black death at all for a waterproof seal. To get a window out just cut the gasket away from the front of the window and keep taking the gasket from around the windshield until you can press on the rear of the windshield and it wants to come out a little. If you go slowly and work your way around the glass you can get it out yourself with nothing more than a razor knife (eg. Olfa) To install said window, buy a new gasket from a Auto Glass shop, soak it in warm soapy water and install it over the glass. Put a thin rope or cord (I used telephone wire) around the gasket lip that goes into the window frame. You need a helper to push lightly on the spot that you are pulling the cord against the frame and the lip on the gasket slides over the metal lip and there you go! It shouldn't have to be anymore difficult than that with a self sealing gasket found on the pre 84 trucks.

Yeah, 1st gens use a gasket, 2nd gens use sealant. 1st gens will just pop out once you get it started with a putty knife or similar tool.
