Help slow truck...
 

Need help please.

I've got an 83 short bed 4x4 with original 86K on the odometer, the PO swapped the carburator for a new one and he also changed the clutch on it prior to selling it to me.

He told me he used to ride about 30 miles back and forth every day, but when I brought it back to my house (about 60 miles away), it struggled all the way, it was hard to keep up to 55-60 mph (my truck has 28" tires).

My trucks feels slow at any speed in any gear.

I tried checking the hoses on the carb, but they all seem to be in the right position (I checked it with my hanes manual).

What else can it be? the clutch maybe?

I like my truck, but I feel dissapointed, this is my 7th Yota, and my 2nd carbureted one.

Please advice Yota Masters...

Not much I can offer regarding the CARB technical data.... I've had them, but never had to work on one. Sorry you're having issues.

If you DO NOT have a CARB issue, ...I would suggest checking very thoroughly for vacuum leaks, then when you verify you do/don't have/'nt any, move to the next simple thing, Air filter.... then ask him if possible the last time he replaced the fuel filter,... and then/or whenever/look into the timing.

If you don't have any chattering in the clutch, it MIGHT not be an issue. Put it in 5th gear and e-brake on, rear wheels blocked, turn the crank bolt with a breaker bar to see if you can get the clutch to slip. If it's solid, you will see the truck is wanting to literally 'drive over you', ya know?

LOTS of good "carb" guys on here...... They will surely help you out... just be patient, as the weekends tend to be a lil thin on here, ....and plus, there is a huge off road event coming up, very soon, and many of the carb guys will be attending back east.... so they're busy getting their own rigs ready, ya know?

I never buy a vehicle that's supposed to be 'running great' without checking the compression.... might not be a bad idea to rent a tester from the local parts store and give it a look see, yeah? Sounds more like Fuel or Fuel/Air mixture to me though.

Well there are so many things...

Make sure the brakes aren't dragging.

Wheel bearings going out.

Tune up (plugs, wires, cap & rotor, adjust valves, timing)

Compression low. Running on all cylinders? Easy way to check if it's running on all cylinders is to have the truck running and pull a spark plug wire off a plug. Did the engine start running worse? It should. Do this to each of them individually. If, after pulling any one of them, the idle doesn't change, then that cylinder isn't firing...

Vacuum leaks (at base of carb or any hose, but it sounds like you checked the hoses)

Any idea if the newer carb is in good working order? Where's the fuel in the sight glass?

Another thing to check for is the egr valve being stuck open. Easy enough to take off. Not a big deal if it's gunked up and stuck closed, but you don't want it stuck open.

my 79 4x4 on 31's will do 82 on flat ground and its got the L43 4 speed trans all stock gears but 22r bored 30 over rest is stock

Could I suggest cam timing? My truck was 1 tooth off (retarded) and fixing it woke up the truck's bottom end quite a bit.

might also check the vacuum advance.

x2 on timing and advance...

I had 1 tooth retarted on cam and vaccum advance problem and would back fire through carb when secondarys opened. found timing would not get less then 25 deg. throw a timing light on it and see where you are at. with cam timing out the dist would not line up.
maybe the old guy went downhill both ways to and from work in the snow ! lol

I took it to a mechanic friend of mine, he is a master on carburators, he has been fixing carbs since prior to EFI.

He tells me the carb is ok, and he tells me that the clutch is slipping.

Now, I felt a truck before when the clutch has been sliping, it has happen to me, but in this case, I don't feel my truck is doing that, I check the RPMs when I'm driving it if I do a sudden accel, it would tell me if its slipping (RPMs will climb fast) and it's not.

So I will try to take the truck and check the timing on it.

As for the vacuum advance, it is hooked up, unless I got the vacuum pulling on the wrong port. But according to the hanes manual, it's hooked up right.

In regarding the fuel in the carb trhough the eye sight, there's fuel there, also the spark plugs, I already did the pulling on each cable and it starts to rough iddle on each cablle pull, so I think the spark plugs are doing their job.

Any way, my last try would be the timing and compression tests, wish me luck guys!

The vac lines to the dist could be right but if the advance diaphragm is bad it still won't work. x2 on the timing , a 86 that I bought had the timing off and it ran good but would hardly pull a small hill. A hill that it would barely climb in 2nd it would go up in 4th after restabbing the dist.

I got tired of all the vacuum hoses around the engine, and got really desperate, so I did what a normal human being would do. I teared them all out, removed the EGR, blocked all the ports I needed to block and hooked up only the hoses I needed (which were only about 4 approx.).

So I'm happy to say that the truck now runs great, I also need to take in consideration that I adjusted one of the adjustment screws on the side of the carb (the one on the bottom) and aparently this also gave it what I think is more air or fuel going into the carb.

Anyway, bottom line, now it works.:banger::banger::banger:

Yes, it still working great.

Now I can say that is ready for a lift and bigger tires.

I already bought some used 33x12.50R15 BFGoodrich mud terrains. I'm trying to go cheap here, so I'm looking for some 85-89 rear junk yard springs to place in the front and some blocks for the rear together with some used Rancho shocks I got from an F250 (I'll make them fit).
