Just to the left of 22R in this photo is the fuel pump. Slightly different than the one you bought, but same thing.

And if it's not there...then yeah, somebody messed around with some stuff. Pretty much normal, with vehicles this old. Won't be the last time you run into something like that.

Thanks but another used fuel tank came with the truck. I will be cleaning it inside and out and will use por-15 on the outside and possiblity bomb spray on the inside. Sorry for the off-topic!

R. RE would not have a mechanical pump, it would be electric, in the tank.

Yes, that's the 22R mechanical pump.

Ooops, I meant to say "22R" and I edited it. I thought I read where someone said to follow the two fuel hoses from the fuel filter I replaced to find the fuel pump. Anyway, I can't believe I missed seeing it in the front like that! Well, thats why I'm on this forum and thanks to everyone for being so helpful!

Here is where the factory fuel pump would go where my finger is. The pump on this motor leaked and I got rid of it, but it is normally a goldish color.


Basicallly just showing how it mounts to pickup tube. This is the best filter I have seen. This truck only 120k miles on it.


The bottom line is plugged on this pick up assembly. The intank filter is setting on top of the dirt covered external filter. The dirt is typically what I have seen. It has started rusting the lines, and have seen holes rusted thru the top of a tank before, but think this pickup assembly will be usable. Alot of times it takes very little to break the lines. I personally dont see how you can drop the tank without damaging the lines.


What I am showing here is how I get the screws out. If you are dealing with rust this bad or worse, getting the screws will only strip using a screw driver. What I do is on the one screw showing, I lift the tube up very slightly and easilyyyy and slide a pair of vise grips and clamp it on the side. On all of the other screws I clamp them from the top and twist like normal. This has always worked for me. This truck is rusted and has been plated from the back to the front.

If you have a '82 or '83 pickup, stock setup is mechanical fuel pump. It is the bronze colored dome shaped thing right in front of the carburetor in this photo... The new one is installed, and the old one is sitting on top of the wood board:




ALSO, there is no place to install a screen filter on this pump (any OEM replacement), and there is no electric fuel pump in an '82 or '83 pickup. There is no electric fuel pump in the gas tank, and none in the system. Terrys87 shows you where the screen filter is in the gas tank, but that is not a pump. You can test the fuel delivery of your screen filter inside the tank by just draining fuel by gravity from the tank. It is a passive filter, not electric driven flow. If it flows, the screen filter is not the problem. If your fuel system has been modified, it might have an electric fuel pump. Do you see a mechanical fuel pump on your 22R? Sounds like you do (with questions about torque wrench). I did not use a torque wrench. But the torque wrench is just to make sure you don't undertighten (leak) or break the bolt (the plastic gasket is replaceable if your need to).

Terrys87 post #8 shows no electric fuel pump in the system.

You can test fuel delivery from the tank by siphon (gravity). If it flows even one gallon per 10 minutes, it is not the problem. (think 60 miles per hour, 18 mpg, 18 minutes per gallon is highway flow rate equivalent) if you get a gallon in 10 minutes, that is more than enough flow to run a 22R.
