front seat replacements

couldn't find much on the search feature....

what have you used for replacement seats? i'm growing very tired of the stock split bench in my 81. they bounce so bad its becoming intolerable. what have you used to replace them, and how did they mount and fit? i am 6'6" so i can't put in anything too big. its already pretty cramped in there.

Ive heard of some people taking late 80's Supra seats and swapping them in with minimal fabrication. I would research seats from toyota cars since they are a lower profile.

Honda Prelude seats. I'm not sure of the year, but I think late 80's early 90's are what mine are. I used the stock Honda tracks, drilled 4 holes per seat, and in they went.. Dean

Early 90's Acura Integra and Honda Civic seats too.

Seats

I just swapped in black leather buckets from a '89 Jeep XJ($35), had to build new seat brackets but it was worth it. Now if the IROK's would just get here, the snow is waiting.

Al-
if you find a set of early 90's Integra seats or Civic they fit really well...you can use the stock front inside mount, drill a hole 1.25" over from the other front mount, bend one bracket for the rear outside and than drill 1 hole for the inside rear mount.

I am heading out to U-pull it in sherwood and will see if they have any and send you a text if they have some in good shape...

These things are great, there is a second hole about 1.25" over from the stock front outside mounting hole that lined up just about right, enlarged it just a hair and was able to use the inside front stock mount:

just had to cut off about the lower .25" or so of the stock bracket to allow it to sit flat on the floor.
I think that being able to use the stock front holes makes the install much more stable and install went very fast...
outside rear mount came up with something similar to WSUWeston's brackets:

The rear inside mount is flat, so ended up using the old stack of washers install method:con:. Used grade 8 fender washers on the underside so that should help spread the load. After cutting out of floor section on a donor truck, I am pretty impressed at how well built these old trucks are...
They will have to come back out though when it fix the rust, needed to get them mounted though so I could still drive the old beast around:D

Dodge Neon SXT seats and Toyota SR5 seats work great in 1st gens

gryllswannabe 02-07-2010 08:39 PM

i am just having my seats reupholstered with vinyl and a rino lined floor so that i can rinse my 1st gen out with a garden hose...we'll see how it goes and what it costs...

speedwagon86 02-07-2010 08:57 PM

I used some SR5 seats out of a 2nd gen 4runner 2 door so i kept the rear foot slider option for the rear passengers. Only cost me 28 bucks pretty good upgrade and they feel like racing seats compared to my old ones.

not a lot of rear passengers though in a 1st Gen truck except for a trekker like mine. 2nd Gen seats in a 1st Gen are also kind of thick seat back wise.

speedwagon86 02-08-2010 08:40 AM

Oh yeah I forgot he had a truck when I posted that about the rear passengers.

speedwagon86 02-08-2010 08:41 AM

For future reference though if someone does look at this thread about seats they do work good if you have a 4runner.

Al:
no luck at the Sherwood Pick-n-pull. There were some early 90's civics with seats in OK condition that would need a couple of gallons of upolstry (sp?) cleaner
they had a Fiero but was missing the seats. I put a set of those in my old 64 V-dub...very nice.

Was hoping to hit the one out on foster but not enough time...

I put seats from a 1992 Honda Prelude in my 1980 and they fit almost perfect. They fit in the two factory front holes perfect. I only had to drill two holes total for the inside back bracket on each seat. They were only 50 dollars for both too from the local junkyard.

Recaro seats. They are really comfortable.

Z's Confederate Toy 02-10-2010 06:50 PM

My dad has Recaros similar to those in his '73 Bronco, I used '76 Bronco Seats in my '85 truck, they are pretty decent. No pics though.

why do people post about their post '83 trucks in the pre '83 folder:dunno:
a 79-83 cab is a lot smaller than a 2nd gen

AndreKing 02-11-2010 05:33 PM

I put some '08 Honda civic seats in, got 'em for $75... I had to drill one hole (for each seat). Couldn't use the side airbags but the seats are nice.

I love that old truck...
