EGR cooler...cooled with coolant or oil?

Hey y'all, new here, 1st time. Anyways, just installed a rebuilt dual row 22r and after driving around the block noticed oil on the egr cooler plate on the rear of head and a little on the bell housing. Just wondering if anyone knows if coolant or oil is cooling that passage. Trying to determine if the oil is coming from the cooler or the half moon valve cover gasket above it. Its def oil thats leaking, not coolant. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated thanks! Hope to get on this forum often.

I think its cooler that do cooling not oil.

It may be that the half moon is leaking. I just got done rebuilding and instaling a 22re in my 4runner. When I did my valve cover and valve cover gasket, I took black RTV and actually applied a light coat inside the half moons. I used enough that the ribs inside the moon were filled. I then installed the valve cover and tightened the lock nuts down in a criss cross pattern until the moons were sandwiched. The plate on the back of the engine will leak oil if it is not securely fastened to the back of the engine. Oil will seep from it according to other guys on here. Mine did not and has not leaked so far. From what I understand the cooling actually takes place from recirculating the exhaust in to the intake manifold and back through the engine. That is supposed to take place only during certain phases of the rpm range. I cannot remember if it is during idle or acceleration. On my engine I am running EGR block off plates and what I did was use black RTV to make a gasket. I also made sure to torque the bolts down evenly on the plate. I used blue loc-tite, flat washers, and lock washers to insure that I did not have to worry about the plate again.

Thanks Stu. Yeah it was a bitch but I managed to get a wrench back there and tighten the bolts down more. I will also apply rtv to the half moons. Sensable idea.
