diagnosing!

Hey guys just got my new head put on with a bigger cam than stock...I'm trying to start the motor and get no firing just release of compression because of this I pulled one of the plugs and tried starting it with the wire connected and I have good spark(plugs are new and I have a new battery in there).... I have the vacuum advance hoses disconnected from the distributor and plugged.. I have the timing set at 5 degrees as under the hood specifies... Now I'm starting to think it's a fuel issue can any body chime in with some suggestions to get this truck running??? keep in mind it hasn't been running for over ten years but was in a safe dry storage are and fluids were drained

oh yeah its my 83 22r 4x4 Federal emission with a used 32/36 weber carb that I installed has no choke and no throttle connected doing everything manuelly please help thanks

loacyota 03-30-2008 10:22 AM

Is it trying to start? Or just not doing anything? Look inside the carb and give it throttle and see if its squirting gas in

blueridder2207 03-30-2008 10:54 AM

it's not doing anything but I know I have fuel line issues I need to know where the fuel lines go from the fuel pump I have a 32/36 weber

rowdy235 03-30-2008 01:20 PM

are you using an elec or mech pump?

blueridder2207 03-30-2008 01:33 PM

I'm using a mechanical pump probably the original....I have the lines hooked up right, now, but the fuel spray is not very much out of the fuel line while I have it disconnected and turning the motor over could I need a new fuel pump?? if so how do you tell??

rowdy235 03-30-2008 02:20 PM

Not much to go wrong with mechanical pump. If lines and filter are good and you're still not getting much gas, 99.9% of the time its the fuel pump.

slacker 03-30-2008 03:10 PM

because you had the head off ... you obviously removed the distributor .

when re-installing , are you sure you were @ TDC ? , and dist on #1 ?

DeathCougar 03-30-2008 03:12 PM

:good:

x2 on that

blueridder2207 03-30-2008 06:55 PM

Yep I'm 100% on the TDC I've got it running now the problem was I wasn't completely lined up with the rotor in the distrbutor cap on the #1 plug wire contact it fires up now....I put a new fuel filter and pump on it and it has plenty of fuel now....Now I'm trying to figure out what the valves should be adjusted to because under the hood suggests .008 for intake and .012 for exhaust that's stock and I have a bigger cam and weber 32/36 any body have any suggestions???

rowdy235 03-30-2008 07:09 PM

Don't quote me on it but the adjustments are the same.

blueridder2207 03-30-2008 07:28 PM

alright I'll go adjust them back to .008 .012 and see how she runs thanks Rowdy and oh yeah I might be able to make to the Oregon meet and greet deal in Brown's camp hopefully by then my 83 will be lifted running my old 33's
