https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.yot...37e7d871f7.jpg Hey there, just noticed this ooze from my clutch.. clutch fluid still full and clear in the reservoir.. any ideas? Maybe assembly grease. . ? |
Looks like old grease
|
Looks like a leaky master cylinder to me. I'd say clean it off, and if it keeps leaking, replace or rebuild the clutch master cylinder. I'd inspect the slave too if it hasn't been recently replaced.
|
It would make sense, because of the location of the cylinder, but that sure doesn't look like brake fluid to me.

If it keeps leaking, what could it be other than brake fluid? Unless I'm mistaken, there isn't much in a clutch cylinder as far as liquids other than brake fluid. Also, what color is the fluid that comes out of the slave when you bleed it? Just because the reservoir is clean doesn't mean the rest of the system necessarily is. |
Yeah, I agree.
I think it's possible somebody greased the piston at some point. You just never know what a PO might have done... Either way, worth looking into the possibility of brake fluid leaking and picking up gunk on the way. What's it feel like? |
Always possible brake fluid picked up contaminants/rust/dirt/etc. along the way. As far as what it could be, brake fluid is the only fluid around that area. Could be grease or penetrating oil from a prior repair.
If it were me (provided the clutch was working properly), I'd wipe it off and keep an eye on it. If it keeps coming back, look into replacing the master/slave. |
What's it smell like? Has it returned since wiping it off?
|
Wipe it off, monitor it, it will leak for years and all over the carpet if it's a bad leak. Even then you can continue to drive until you have time to replace the clutch master and slave as long as you don't allow the fluid to run out in the master. Not many of our trucks still have the original clutch master and slave. It's a very common repair. |
Brake fluid is also very corrosive. I wouldn't want it leaking down my firewall onto the floorboards...
It won't feel like oil or grease if you feel it. |
All of a sudden I'm interested in this thread cuz I noticed this morning that my clutch master cylinder is leaking.
One more thing to add to the (never ending) to-do list. |
