Carb woes
Hey guys, I gotta 83 22R stock carb, but it has an aftermarket manual choke, don't ask, wasn't me. Here's the problem, anytime I go down the highway for any length of time and then slow down, say at an exit, and come to a stop, the idle drops real quick, it sputters for a sec, then dies. If I pull the choke knob out, it wil still run, but obviously very high rpm idle. Is there a way to adjust this or should I just go ahead and cut my losses and get the Weber?

I put a 38 weber on mine I love it, just had to figure out the vacum lines, runs great easy start up.

What gas milage do you see with the 38 weber?

My friend that I traded for it has a 32/36 all rebuilt, just have to talk him out of it. How easy is the install really?

good to know, thanks kdo58, I am also debating rebuilding my stock carb, buying the 38 or the 36 weber. How is it in the cold?

There should be a vacuum operated dashpot that would normally revent that from happening. (throttle being slammed shut)
check where the throttle linkage connects at the carb, on the same side as the throttle return spring. Check and make sure the vacuum line is connected and isn't cracked or damaged. |
it runs great starts up are easier than my stock carb, i press the throttle to the floor once and it starts right up, give a minute touch the gas peddle and it idle down to 500 rpm.

the install was easy. I got mine new, i just followed the direction. I removed all my vacum lines plug holes, with plugs, i did not know what to do with the dist. vacum line so i email lc eng. they said cap of the vacum nearest to the dist. body and run the other one to the carb, not too the manifold.

Well, after watching the trail of heavy black smoke from the exhaust whenever I go past half throttle, I am blaming my issues on the air/fuel mix. I haven't worked on carburetors very much so I'm not sure how to go about leaning it out. Where would I adjust the air/fuel mix?

I love all the pro-Weber'ers here.
I for one am not a fan. Having adjusted and worked on one (our 85 toy) I much prefer my stock carb (on our two 87's). It's finnicky to adjust and very sensitive and they are highly prone to dieseling because they lack the electronic fuel solenoid that cuts fuel off to the bowl. Instead, to high an idle can cause the motor to diesel. It's adjusted fine now and runs fine but I've just found the stock carbs to be more reliable plus I'm not a fan of the Air-Cleaner setup with it being top-mounted like you find on most American Carbs in hotrods, old chevies n fords. If you do get a weber, might I suggest also investing in a set of jets. You might find you need a larger jet. Need I mention you'll probably, and likely and no you will, lost gas mileage with a weber, especially a 38. |
