Bell housing to block bolt size and whats that thing?
Hello, I took the trans down to replace the clutch and noticed that it only had the two top bolts that connect the bell housing to the block. The side ones were missing. Are there supposed to be the side bolts? If so what size are they? I checked my local hardware stores and could not find anything that matched up. Also while the trans was out I noticed an oil leak from the back of the block just below the valve cover. I looks like a box with an RTV seal. What is that and If I remove it to re seal it will any thing fall or pop out I must be aware of?

Damn I just had my tranny down. I know the pitch is 1.25....I think it's 14mm? or 12mm....the length is about 1.5-2". Those are the long ones up top IIRC. The side bolts are shorter by about .5". I do have an 82 22r mated to a W56 but I would be on it being the same size bolts. 99% of all bolts in the yota around the engine are 1.25 pitch and they are definitely metric. They are also the same size bolts on my 98 4runner lol.
No that's part of the valve cover seal. I used some Indian Head sealer along with the rubber block just to make sure it didn't leak again. I know Napa carries the stuff. It comes in handy. You can use it on the cork oil pan seals too....locks everything up tight.

I just replaced my L43 and needed to replace one of those large blots. So I measured one at 11mm x 50mm. I don't know which side it came from but when I put the trans back up, those two large blots are what I used to start the remount. I would say they are very necessary.
Make sure they are a fine thread. I needed a longer bolt than stock for my L43 to L50, I had what looked to be the same thread but it wasn't. I crossed the threads and ended up with a much longer bolt & nut.
Hint would be try the new bolt in the hole to make sure it threads in by hand FIRST.

thanks for the help. I tried a bigger ace hardware further away and they had the bolts I needed. They are 12mm with 1.25 pitch. I think the length was 50mm. Finally got the trans and xcase and x member back in, was a pain doing it by myself. Floor Jack, ratchet straps and 2x4s did the job though.
As for the plate with 5 bolts on the back of the head it looks like an oil transfer tube type thing. To feed oil to each side of the head? How does one get to the top bolts on that? Its tight against the firewall, so a ratchet and even a wrench is too tight.
Thanks
Mike
