Any difference in the Celica 20R vs. pickup 20R heads?
 

I'm rebuilding the 20R in my '75 pickup, I have a spare 20R head from a Celica of unknown year. Can I use parts from the Celica head in my pickup? Specifically the camshaft looks to be in better shape. I thought I had read somewhere that the heads were different in some way but I can't find anything saying that now so maybe I made it up. There are slightly different part numbers on the two camshafts though. Did the part change in different model year 20R's?


What about shifting the exhaust valves over? The ones in the engine seat well but they are looking a little wasp-waisted. Assuming that they feel tight in the seats and I lap them is there any reason not to switch the valves from one head over to the other? New ones are cheap but I wonder if they're going to be as high quality as Japanese steel circa 1975

I don't know, I did limited research on 20r. But you can measure lift. Regardless though it should work.

Why would you go through rebuild a head and use 30+ year old used parts? Unless you have specs and calibrated micrometer to measure everything.

As to why I would use the parts, I'm already into this rebuild about $700 more than I was expecting so I have to save money where I can. Also, I suspect these 30 year old parts are better than anything I'm going to get new unless I drop bucks on the high-end aftermarket stuff. Japanese steel quality in '75 was really, really good from what I'm seeing and if it's still in spec I trust it a hell of a lot more than something new from Taiwan.

They have none of them or only some of them? I have a 20R in my 81 from an unknown parts vehicle, and it had the bosses on the side of the head, but not the one on the front. It also didn't have a hole in the block for the bottom of the Y-shaped power steering bracket.

(As an aside, am I the only one who thinks Toyota completely overkilled the PS bracketry? I mean, there's three burly pieces of sheetmetal and what, eight M10 bolts... I'm missing about a third of the OEM mounting points and I can't get the PS pump or idler pulley to budge; the whole truck starts moving if I try to wiggle them)
