83 pickup manual free wheeling hub clutch won't fully disengage.

I just finished a full SA rebuild on my 83 pick up and was on the home stretch bolting the manual locking hubs on. When I finished I grabbed the rotor and spun it with the manual selector in the "free" position and I could hear that the clutch in the hub wasn't fully disengaged from the inner hub gear and was clicking. I took everything back apart and now realize that my problem lies in the free wheeling hub. When I put the cap and dial back on the hub I can feel that the inner hub is locked, however if I separate the cap from the hub body just slightly the inner hub will spin. I'm wondering if anybody knows which part would typically have to wear out for that to happen. I've had the whole thing apart and there isn't anything that I can see that could be causing this problem. I've tried the cover in the hub from the other side and everything works there. It seems as though its in the actual hub body itself.

Thanks for any help!

Yes, try rotating the locking mechanism and re-installing it. There are a few ways it'll go together but only one where it works right. Also, if you used a lot of grease inside, the suction of that grease might be preventing the gear from popping out all the way.

I know the cap and hub body are going together correctly, and i haven't put grease in it yet. I know the mechanism itself isn't working correctly. It doest even work in my hand. The cap and dial with springs and the clutch work on the drivers side hub body bit neither cap and dial work on the passangers side hub body. I can post a video tomorrow. I was wondering if anyone knew if the hub bodys are different for drivers and pass. side. Because the offset on the inside of the hubs are different.

Thanks for the suggestions.

Everything from the knuckle on out should be identical side to side. Hubs are the same, should work on either side. If one side is different, try and narrow down what part is off and find out why.

Being such an old truck someone has probably been into the hubs before, and not having any knowledge of how they actually work. I had the same problem and after making sure that the manual hub was working good I noticed that I had to take a small file and debur some rough edges someone left for me on the main key way. Once that was done it was smooth engaging. BTW grease makes all the difference in the world. You should have some on it before reassembley anyways. Good luck with the fix

I'd like to get some pictures up here but can't seem to figure out the best way to post them. I don't have an online picture account.

If it's true that everything from the hub bearings out should be the same then it looks like one of the manual locking hub bodies isn't correct. The passenger side is spaced differently than the driver's side. If you pick up the silver manual hub body and look at it from the back it has a deeper offset from the rear bolt face to the inner hub gear itself.

p.s. At least the hawks made it interesting it was looking pretty dismal for us at the beginning. It actually turned out to be a fun series to watch.

yes they are both exactly the same as 4crawler mentioned .. they are not different from side to side ... so it sounds like you have a wrong hub .

search for uploading pictures .. it's pretty easy .

So here is the pic you can see that the offset is different on each hub. The insides all seem to be the same. I was hoping someone mightknow where to look for just the silver housing.
