83 Better mpg questions?
 

What things can I disconnect as far as smog and emissions to get more mpg? I also don't want to ruen my engine by doing so, and don't want to mess with the electrical. Just simple stuff that's not going to make it run like crap. I have a 83 22e 4 cylinder 4x4 5s. Right now it's getting 19 mpg witch I know is good I'm sure it could be better.

Most smog devices don't adversely affect fuel mileage. Best to leave them alone, or restore them to correct function if necessary.

19mpg is not too bad for a carbed 4x4.

Maybe a thorough tune-up using factory parts and advancing the timing a bit (as long as the engine does'nt ping), might give a mile or 2 improvement. Don't forget that valve adjustment.

Probably easiest way to improve mileage would be for you to drive slower.

Thanks. I know my sisters 79 Corolla did better with the pcv dissconected. As for the speed you must have seen me speed past you before. .. Raceing is in my blood and it's fun going fast in a manual.

Do an EGR Delete, my buddy did it on his 83 and it brought up the gas mileage by 4 MPG. It was cheap, very easy, and it cleans up the engine compartment a lot.

If egr's plugged or seized, deleting it can help. My 22re went up from 17 to 20 cause the passage on the back of the heads clogged. Vacuum test in fsm (4crawler has it too i think) If it's no good, block it.

They will know.

You shall most likely not pass.

It is a violation of Federal law, and many states laws, to remove, or defeat factory smog devices.

It will be very obvious to most smog guys that you've removed emissions equipment.

19mpg isn't bad considering a 2wd truck will only get around 25 to maybe 30mpg. My 93 4wd only gets maybe 19 hwy on a good day.

If you are in a state that does emissions testing, you cannot remove any of that equipment. It would not have a large impact on MPG anyway.

I recently "restored" the engine in mine and get 23MPG city and 25MPG highway. Those are Canadian / Imperial gallons which are about 15% more then the US gallon. (I hate litres!) If you have non-ethanol gasoline available try it; ethanol's BTU rating is about 90% of regular gasoline. Less BTU's = more fuel burnt to do same amount of work. Canadian imported trucks of that era had zero smog junk on them, so the smog stuff may account for maybe 1-3MPG.

19 is good on a 4wd 4cylinder

I wonder if I should get a Webber carb if I get rid of the egr, or just the egr

I know if mileage was a factor to me I wouldn't always buy 4wd.

If you have emissions in your local, I wouldn't pull anything off. Once you put the Weber on, until you get it tuned in. I'd suspect your mileage isn't going to get better, unless your factory carb is in need of rebuild.

Pull Egr clean all the carbon out of it, and tune up the truck. put a header on it so it can breath better. prolly best your gonna get... you could stick some taller gears in it, but once again why have 4wd if you are going to hobble it...

Thanks I was just thinking about Webber carbs in jenneral. I've cleaned up my egr this weekend already. If it becomes an issue I may get rid of it 11 months of the year. I know it barely passed dude to the egr. It should be doing better now.

Awesome! I am not trying to discourage you, just not sure if mileage is going to improve.

My 82 is all stock to pass smog and runs well at about 18-20mpg hwy. I read someone say to save on fuel they put a switch inside cab to cut off the idle cutoff switch at hwy speeds but have to wonder if that makes it run too lean Thinking it might be a good idea for long trips if not harming motor?

UPDATE RESULTS: I have tested capping the egr just to see if it helps on gas. From what I can tell is that I'm still getting 19 mpg. When I took my egr off I did notice that it had a ton of carbon build up plugging the egr. I have monitored the temp and everything is the same as before. So my egr was already plugged dude to the carbon and I still barley passed emissions when I had the egr on. Fiy I still have the egr on but it doesn't make a difference in my situation.
