83 22r going in a 93 efi

going to pick up an 83 22r off a buddy, fresh rebuilt motor, trans, tcase and axles for a grand, question is, are they interchangable

It will fit. However the 22R is not an EFI engine so when you unplug the engine save all the wires and ECU otherwise its going to be problems if you need to go backwards. Someone did that for me and its not fun chasing parts to get an EFI engine to run because you are "missing a signal".

ya my biggest concern was if the 22r head will also allow a 22re intake mani to be bolted to it or if it were only certain years they were intercgangable

putting in a motor older than your truck is illegal

shaunneuhaus95 03-28-2011 12:13 PM

why is it illegal, ive never heard of this. motor swaps are done all the time. the motor was rebuild fresh top to bottom pullin it from the 83, going in a 93, motor from 93 is gonna get rebuilt nicely and put back into the 83 for the rok rig.

illegal? how? who says?

how about all the people who put 350's in there 4runners and trucks?

i doubt its illegal.

not illegal but makes it a little harder to pass smog in some states. However, Keep an eye on the motor mounts. I think the early early and late late 22r's had different mounts. And somewhere in the middle years they had provisions for both styles.

thanxx xxx were pullin the old 93 right now and gonna go get the 83 this weekend. and then the fun begins

xxxtreme22r 03-28-2011 12:53 PM

also keep in mind that efi system isn't gonna swap over, your gonna have to keep it carb'd I believe. Also you might run into issues with the exhaust manifold. Bolt pattern is gonna be different.

shaunneuhaus95 03-28-2011 01:04 PM

dam that means i gotta swap the heads out........hmmmmm........ gotta think about this for a min

xxxtreme22r 03-28-2011 01:04 PM

the 94 head isn't gonna work on an 83 either.

double check on the intake manifold though. Not really sure if it will or wont work. Easy way to tell is maybe check intake manifold gasket applications between a 1987 22r engine and the 83 22r engine. I know for a fact the exhaust ports are different. Intake mani ports should be both square just not sure on the bolt pattern. If they take the same gasket then it should bolt on.

ok i think im gonna do a bit more research on these engines before i go fully commited to this idea
