I joust bought an 81 toyota pickup and im almost positive i need a new tranny. And since its an 81 with a 20R i would like to put the 22R in it to give it some more power. I found an 85 with under 51,000 miles. Cab is trashed but motor, tranny front and rear axels are all in good shape. He even said the frame is rusty but not rotted. He wants 500 for it. Will the motor and tranny work with my 81?

And if the axels are good. Am i better off switching them too?

Yes, you can use everything including the axles. The 85 axles are better because they are gusseted underneath at the factory. You may have to swap the transfer case flanges to match your driveshafts but that is a simple swap.

Sweet. If everything is running on the parts truck do you think its a good deal to buy all of it for 500? Im pretty sure it comes with the transfer case as well. This is the add i found on craigslist...

What gear ratios do the axels have on the 85 anyway?

It won't specify but if you search a bit you can find out what the codes are for the axle ratio.

the transmission for the 85 is about 6 inches longer, so you may need some driveshaft work. if the 85 is the same wheelbase however you could probably use the driveshafts from it

and you'll have to make a custom mount for the x-member

Not really sure if swapping a 20R with a 22R is gonna make a noticable difference. Has anyone been able to tell the difference in power? i think its only a difference of 10 or 15 horsepower but i guess if u can do it and have the engine then do it up.

the 20R is a gutless pig, that doesn't quit running, very reliable just not powerful

the 22R is also gutless but has much more of an aftermarket, and has the potential for more power, even more reliable and more of a SOB to kill

I've had both and there is significant difference, the 22R is more peppy and has more low end

Yeah that is true. I have noticed that the 22R in my 83 has alot more pep and low end torque than the 3VZE on my 92. The 3vze doesnt respond as quickly and seems to needs a heavier foot to get over obsticles. I think a good part of that though is due to the 2ng gen 4runners having a really stiff gas pedal.

'81's have 22R's, unless someone swapped motors somewhere along the way.
