81 22r slow start when hot
I'm having a slow start issue when the truck is warmed up. Battery and alternator check out fine. The truck cranks perfect even when it's below freezing outside.
The issue arises when I cut the truck off and try to start it back within about 10 minutes. It barely turns over. The truck has not failed to crank as of yet.
Time for a starter rebuild or possible bad connection?

its good. i mean when the engine is warmed up at operating temperature. it acts like a heat soak issue as its only after ive driven it for a bit.
I was leaning towards a bad ground but i would think that it would do it when it was cold also. Another reason I would lean towards a bad ground is when the truck is idling, if i turn on the blower motor, it pulls the power down so bad it almost stall it out.

I'm also curious to hear how this pans out. I've had this issue before (with Ford trucks, never Toyotas - although anythings possible). I've wrapped the starter in that heat shield wrap, put in a heavy duty ground wire kit, new starter, full tune up, new battery, et cetera. It still does it. Runs great, BUT, like the original poster said: if it is warmed up, and you turn it off and come back in a few minutes, it has a heck of a time firing up.

If starter motor tries to turn but groans (struggles), AND you say battery is fine, possible problems are high resistance in battery-to starter solenoid contacts- to starter motor- to ground. Could be solenoid contact (see 4 Crawler's site).
Thermostat does not affect cranking
Time for a starter rebuild or possible bad connection?
First-gen starting (cranking) system explained here.
Except that, I believe the 81 does not have a starter relay. Ignition switch contact closes, sends power to coil of starter solenoid. Solenoid actuates, contacts close and send power to starter motor. Also actuates a gear to engage starter and flywheel.
Good luck and Merry Christmas.
