74 and/or 78 wolverine craigslist find?
hey dudes. first post here.
I might have found something interesting. Maybe. Somebody tell me what I have.
Dude on craigslist claims to have a 1974 Toyota Hilux that was converted into a wolverine 4x4 in 1978 in Van Nuys, CA. It has a buick 231 v6, a dana 20 transfer case, dana 27 front axle, and turbo 350 transmission. Dude says the trans is shot so I have to bring a trailer. He wants $3000 for it.
Couldn't find much online in terms of info/background on the wolverine, so if somebody could inform me or point me in the right direction, that would be much appreciated.
Also is this guy for real? Is it a legit wolverine?
Pics below, let me know, yo.

I don't have an answer but that is a very cool truck!

right? I think I'm going to get it regardless of if its a legit wolverine or not. If there isn't something catastrophically wrong with it that is. It's just too badass to pass up for too good a price imho.

Pretty cool. What would be your plans for it?
Wolverine was like a 3rd company making the 4x4 conversions of the Hilux trucks, since they were all 2wd before 1979 when the "pickup" came out. The other versions were the Trekker and the Trailblazer
I have a 75 Hilux and still look for them on CL - the price would be slightly high for a regular 2wd given that this one doesn't drive (does it run?). Since this one is a pre-smog (for CA) and has a 4x4 conversion it would be a more desirable truck if you want a pre-smog wheeler and thus could be a great find, but then again you can't really drive it to know what else is wrong. I've seen other 4x4 Hilux for sale over the years, but those were all homebrew ones - kind of a shame to take a good condition classic Hilux and raisin it up, parts are already hard enough to find for them.
FYI, I dunno how tall you are, but the 2nd gen Hilux (1973-1978) had a revision in 1975 where they made the cab a few inches longer and added the 20r instead of the 18r.

I think I'd like to take it offroading and as a general desert shenanigans truck. I also want something to wrench on 'cus I havent had the opportunity to work on any of my own cars very much. That, and the fact that this thing already has an american drivetrain, it might be a good excuse to rip the buick v6 out and throw in a chevy small block while I'm replacing the turbo 350.
And yeah, the fact that it's pre-smog is a big plus for me.
And I'm like 5'8", so height isn't an issue for me thank god.
