Retarded timing will contribute to overheat. Stock carb would be at 5deg btdc with the advance disconnected at the dist & vacuum capped @950rpm.

Do you have a high alt compensator? Have you checked it?

why would a heater core overheat the entire engine?
In theory, I should be able to bypass it completely and keep the engine at optimal temp, correct?
I am at high altitude (6400 ft above sea level).
Timing is set at zero to get a baseline.
I didn't want to advance it until the heat issue is stabilized.
You are correct, the heater core should not affect the cooling of the engine. Most people turn the heat off during the summer, when cooling demand is the greatest.

Do you know if the engine is running rich or lean?

Timing and Air/Fuel ratio being off could cause the engine to run hotter.

You probably have to re-jet the Weber carburetor for your altitude if you haven't already.

Have you verified that the engine is actually getting hot and the gauge is giving you an accurate reading?

How is the compression?

What do you mean by installing a max. flow water pump as opposed to a standard water pump?

I am kind of suspect of the electric fan not pulling enough air through the radiator. Typically, the stock fluid clutch fan (with shroud) will out-perform most electric fans.

Judging by the pictures, there is no high altitude compensator installed. Also, that system, along with other emissions related systems typically get removed when a Weber is installed in place of the stock carburetor.

Good points on the e-fan and mixture. Weber could be running too lean.

I asked about the heater core because even flushing could leave some debris inside - contaminating an otherwise new & clean coolant system. Probably not the cause in this case, but worth a discussion.

Ahh....I see where you were going with that.
It is worth a check.
