1980 toyota power steering swap..REVISED

alright, first off,ive searched and all ive come up with is ,yes ,it can be done.my question is,what year donor vehicles can i get all the parts off.i have a 22r in my 80,and ive come across 2 2nd gen 4runners at a pick and pull with either 22r's and re"s in them with complete power steering setups.will the steering box bolt directly in? what years am i looking for for direct swap donors?

IFS and solid axle front ends are different steering boxes unless I'm completely mistaken. You'd have to find a pre-85 power steering setup.

Yep. As far as I know, you want a 79-83 4wd power steering setup. You can make a 2wd work, but I think there's a difference in the steering shaft or something...

IFS will be completely different and require a lift and welding.

if you go with a crossover steering conversion, my build thread in my signature has some pics of how you do it. Many other threads out there as well. As far as getting a bolt on power steering package, you would need a steering box off a 79-85 truck. I think push/pull power steering boxes are fairly rare, but I could be mistaken. However, I am guessing that both boxes would use the same pump and pulley system, so those parts you can get off virtually any 22r/22re with a power steering pump. you will also need the extra bolt on pulley.

I did the PS conversion. I got the pump, crank pulley, reservoir and hoses from a 2wd. The reservoir needs to be from the first gen Toys, there is a difference. Found a steering box from a 4x4. Bought the belt from Autozone. It was really very easy to instal.

I have been thinking about doing this to my 1980 2wd also. I would like to know the answer too.

I forgot my mount did come from the 2wd. I had to replace the idler pulley bearing, but I had one that I bought for my old 2wd '89. I've had that bearing for over 20 years and it was still in new the box.
I have a res. for the second generation, but it doesn't "bolt right on" They are slightly different than first gens.

I could be wrong, but I think he's asking if everything except for the steering box can come off any 22R truck. That would be right up to the Tacoma, is my guess. Then find the steering box from a 79-85. I'm not completely sure why, but I guess there could be all sorts of circumstances.

I'm not familiar enough with the later models to answer...

On my truck, I'm pretty sure I have to drill for the reservoir. I saw where I took it off the donor truck (another 83), and mine doesn't have those holes.

Anyways...

you have a 3" lift kit, if you are gonna convert to power steering you might as well spend some extra money and convert to High steer which uses an IFS steering box...it will be the best mod you have done to your truck. the steering difference is a night and day improvement in handling and safety...

As I remember, the angle for the res. "legs" aren't on the proper angle for the G1 inner fenders. If I knew this stuff before I did mine, I could have saved about $75 and a lot of time running around.

I just went out and checked the newer pump, it's different than the pump I used. It has some extra tubes on it that I didn't know what they were for. I think the guy I got that pump/res. from said it was off a '87? That's another reason I got everything I could from that first gen 2wd.

PO let the pump go with the motor when he sold it.
