1980 Exhaust manifold heat shield question

I just purchased a 1980 toyota pickup 2wd (gas reasons, the 4x4 is a killer on gas) and the exhaust manifold is cracked. So in repairing it I am wondering that when I place it back on do I need to keep the thin metal heat shield? Is it that essential? If I don't put it back on then I only need to purchase one gasket rather than two and plus, i could see the heat shield being the cause of the cracked manifold by keeping heat in rather than letting it out. Any information would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

BTW I am talking about a 20r engine.

Since I put a header on my 20r I don't run the heat sheild. Runs fine for me...I guess the function would be to keep the heat away from plug wires? Just my .02

thanks. that is what I figured also. I have no issues with my header on my 22r in my 90 toyota 4x4 affecting the plug wires and I did not put the heat shield on that, so i will just not bother installing the heat shield on the 1980. Plus I have a 1987 3/4 ton 4x4 chevy and the heat shield has caused me to crack 3 manifolds. once i removed it i have not cracked a single manifold. Just never delt with this old of toyota engine and thought I would check.

those heat shields were junk. i pitched mine back when i had a 20R in my truck, made no real difference that i could tell.

toyota switched to a much better design in '83 or '84, part of the heat shield was incorporated into the gasket, and the outer half bolts on to the manifold with 3 bolts.

Yup I junked mine as well on a '78 20R. All they served back in the day other than a "shield" was to heat a little air for the engine.... just a pile of aluminum crap.

Heat shield

Just so you guys know you need that shield to pass smog in California. Bought my truck without one and having trouble trying to find one. It's the final piece to the puzzle, going to junk yard Tuesday

Hi,

I am trying to desmog Maxine, but her manifold heat shield fasteners seem melted. Can I grind them off and still reuse the shield?

Cheers
