1977 Toyota Pick-Up
 
I have a couple of questions about these pick-ups
I am starting to fall in love with them!

I love the Solid Axel and some of the colors I have seen them in..
I believe there all 4Cyl. Correct?
What Kind of Manual tranny does it have 3spd, 4spd, 5 spd?
What the gas mileage like on these things?

I am really considering stoping some of the mods on Tess and saving Up for one of these pic-ups as a fun DD and just all aroudn work truck instead of gettitng Tess all dirty on the inside...

Any info on these trucks would be great!

I could be wrong, but I think anything pre 1980 was only 2WD. Are you talking about the Stout? Would have been 4 spd probably and definitely 4 cyl.

There was a 77 on bid that ended already that was same color alot cleaner and but set up was the same, sloid axel up front...
Is this called a stout?

I am not sure, but I think yea they are called the stout.

Honestly I would rather an 83-85...such an old vehicle unless found in pristine shape will be very, very rust ridden. Not to say an 83-85 cant be, but theolder you go the more the vehicle has been on the road.

Well Like I Siad I have seen some really clean one go off on ebay, there was one in texas that was in pristein condition so...

I just lov ethe look and so could imagine driving it, I just need some info on it I guess...

I felt the same way and had a few lines to buy them but they always got snatched out from under me. They're great little trucks, though not necessarily comfortable for tall people. I ended up giving up on it and am going to make the most out of my current truck.

Like I said This will all be in due time, since it dosen't have airbags (HAHA) mom wont pu tit on her insurance so I would have to pay for that On my own, I am just sick and tired of running errands in the 4Runner and getting the interior looking like crap (alread craked some of the paneling)

Also I think a 4banger would be mroe fuel effiecnt than the v6 that i have, which only gets 16 MPG in the city (i go to school in the city and stop and go is killing me, i now hwo to refill the tnak 2-3 time a week instead of one back when i was out of school and just going to work and friends houses...)

Yeah, thats what I get with my 91 3.0 5speed. Gas is a necessary evil. I suggest you take some other form of transportation or get a little commuter car if it's that big of a deal. It'll take a long time to make up your cost in gas. As a high school student, it hurts my wallet pretty bad to travel 60-100 miles per day in stop and go traffic. Besides, if you buy an older truck with an SFA, you'll want larger tires. There goes your gas efficiency.

I believe the 70s used a dana 35 or 30, i saw this on pirate once.


I had an 80 that looked like that one, but i had it lifted locked and on 33s, and could go anywhere.

Yes I did show up late with Heeps
It was the Big black Wranglers Fault!
He was late meeting us and he can't do I think past 70 wihtout bing all ove rthe road on the highway so...

Well, I've got a 77 here at home and it was a great truck. Toyota started making the 4WD Hilux in 1979, I've got a '79 4WD too! The name that you were trying to figure out was indeed the Hilux, not Stout. Stout was the first versions of the Toyota P/U in the USA. I dunno what info you want, they started putting the 20R engine in them in '72, although after 1975 it's a more common find.

I guess info I was loking for was the MPG both 2WD and 4WD
And what the maual tranny setup was like.
Was it an easy truck to work on?

I like the solid axel and I like the look of the Trucks stock.

So putting bigger tires and such was not on the agenda,
If I ever planned on doing that I would get another set of rims from the Junkyard and just do that...

If the gas mileage is anything better than my V6 4Runner I am strongly considering to get one as a DD.
Preferably 4WD cause I am just one who dosen't see practicality of a 2WD truck...
I just don't an never will, Even if someone explained all the diffrent ways...
I would still say "Throw a front axel on that thing already!!"

Also I want to use it for haulin fire wood and such, cause I am sick and tired of using the 4Runner for that kind of stuff (the entire roof lining is all scratched up from boxes mom wanted me too take to good will on a daily basis last year..)

Plus my father wants to start doing alot more stuff around his house and his dinky little passport dosen't have room in it or a trailer hitch, so I get to do the best of both worlds...

Anywho now that rant is over...

Yes Now that I know what engine was in
What is the Gas Mileage.
And that the tranny set up was a 4spd.

Is normal maintence easy on these?

LAter ont he road after I am out of college, would this be an easy rig to turn into a true "just trial" rig?

4x4 trucks were first available in '79. You cannot get the '78 or earlier 4 round headlight style in a 4x4 unless it is custom. Stouts were made from '62 (I think) to '69 and had a 3R engine and a 4 speed on the column. The Hilux (in the US) was made from 1970-1975. It had an 8R engine up to I think '72, and then they used the 18R until 1975 when they changed to the 20R. I am not sure when the 5 speed became available, but I know that some of the 20R trucks had them.

They will all be more fuel efficient then your V6 4Runner. You could swap a 22RE in there and it would probably get around 30 MPG. I would think that a 20R would get slightly less than a 22RE, but it would still be good, even with a 4 speed. A 4 speed can even be more efficient on the highway because the engine will be more in the "efficient range" of the engine at highway speeds. Lower RPMs does not always mean better gas mileage, depending on the situation.

Don't believe everything you read on Pirate. Personally, that's a croc imo.

With the older trucks remember that parts availibility might be less then perfect. I have difficultly finding stuff for my 82, I can't imagine a 77.
A lot of stuff made for the pick ups won't fit the earily first gens, so keep that in mind too.

I'd get an 82 if I was you, sqaure lights own!

i found a 75 2wd with the 20r (donor motor for my 80 4x4)
the 75 2wd had a 4 speed and my 80 has a 4speed side loader. 81 had a top loader 4 speed.
the motors (20r in my case) was very easy to work on and swap.
i like the older look with the round headlights. i think the square headlight 82+ pickups look like a lame transformer.
