1976 truck has to pass california smog
I just bought a 1976 toyota chinook, from a storage yard. Until a month ago it hadn't ran for two years. I installed new plugs, plug wires, distributor cap and rotor, breaker points, air filter, fuel filter, oil change, I'm sure you know the routine going through a used rig for the first time. Anyhow it runs nice. I do however have to pass california smog to finish registering it. It has a smog pump but the smog/AC belt has been removed, obviously I can put a belt back on it but I want to know it's working properly before I go to smog it. If anyone is familular with the emissions system in these old trucks, I would be greatful for any tips on getting it back to factory specs.
Thanks |
Good luck!

Depending on where you live in CA, emissions regs can be pretty relaxed on the older trucks. Start by getting a pre-check, you may be OK right out of the gate. If you aren't... it will be painful.
Replace: EGR (I promise it doesn't work anymore) O2 sensor Then try the pre-check again. You may have to replace VSV's, the computer, etc., if you don't get by at this point. |
1976 Truck Want to pass smog.. once.
Hey there,
I'm currently trying to pass smog in ca in a town that I only need to pass once for registration. It is non-cat. I know i need the smog pump and connections , does anyone have a list of parts and also potential resources to buy? Ill start checking pick n pull inventories but wondering if anyone here has ideas or more information. Thank you! |
Im also entrusted in what you find. I have 78 and live in La need to pass my as well. Please post what you find.

This thread died 8 1/2 years ago. Might be better off creating a new one.

Go take it to get smogged and post the sheet. We need some sort of basis to work on that explains why you failed (or passed)
